You can not say or prove that the sz is a genetic disease like common hereditary diseases be known to the science
You cannot say/ prove that sz is a mental illness.
Because, the diagnosed symptoms are Seem to the observers As if they are a mental symptoms as a result of genetic defect ,all of that without prove the existence of the mental illness or genetic defect in the anatomical structure of the person with sz !
the question
Is the schizophrenia a whole disease condition ? OR
A group of independent diagnostic symptoms -without rooting from a whole disease condition ?
This is why I will never willingly have kids. If I could afford it I would get a vasectomy.
My doctor said that if one of the parents has schizophrenia the chance is 10% that the child gets it.
I agree @panoramic202
I’m not that educated on genetics and inheriting stuff, but my father developed schizophrenia after abusing drugs in his 20s-30s. I am now 18 and don’t have it. Will something like drugs trigger it? Or am i safe because I still don’t have it?
I’d like to encourage you to join our forum for Family and Caregivers that can be found at:
While this is a peer support forum for people with schizophrenia and other closely related psychotic disorders, the Family forum is specifically for people like yourself, who have a loved one they are concerned about.
Also, please let your loved one know about this forum as they may find it helpful.
Best of luck
My dad abused drugs and doesnt have schizophrenia but is eccentric with thoughts. I however have never abused drugs and have got it.
I wouldnt do drugs at all nad try and get enough sleep.
I told my son to never use drugs, because he is genetically more vulnerable to getting it. I recommend you do the same. Don’t play with fire.
I am slighty afraid over the heritability thing. I got psychosis after kid’s birth. Kid’s dad had sz in the family. He wasnt very cooperative with the psychological tests done, but seemed to have paranoia too, in retrospect. Both of us suffered child abuse though…he more than me. I think it is not just genes…also abuse, drugs, etc.
I tell my kids to stay away from drugs. No need to raise an already elevated risk profile.
Oh, my np said to give my kids vitamin d. My levels were so low that it could have caused the psychosis.
Hey @Andrew welcome to the community. Make sure you get your omega 3 fatty acids. Like get enough of it. Eat 6 ounces of salmon a week or something like that.
Doing that will help greatly reduce your chances of getting schizophrenia. It will prevent the chances of getting sz. Also stay away from drugs. People can get get sz in their 20’s so try avoiding drugs and get your omega 3’s.
Just a reminder that sz is not a genetic disease. We honestly don’t know what is the mode of inheritance for sz right now.
My cousin on my mom’s side of the family had Sz along with me. He committed suicide back in July 2012. On the other hand my dad who I never knew when I was a kid supposedly had Sz. I met him once when I was 18 and there wasn’t any apparent signs of it. But just casually meeting my dad once, he wouldn’t say if he had Sz
