I think certain foods help with symptoms and certain foods make it worse. A year ago I would have thought there was very little relation between the 2 but , at least for me , there is certainly a relation , I find my sympthoms generally get worse if I binge on a food source ( I’m not fat , just eating too much of one thing). A balanced diet is the way to go…, the more balanced my diet the better I feel.
I think there are foods that affect me adversely, too.
Man, am I pissed - I have been eating lower carb, veggies, blueberries, keeping more active, and I tested my fasting blood glucose levels and it was 159! I recently increased my Risperdal dose, this might have something to do with it.
The good news is that I lost some weight recently. Sorry, just venting
No bother , yeah the fruits have fructose in them. And the low carb stuff often has salt , look to whole foods , not refined. If you are worried by your sugar , look for carbs with a low GI , oats and whole grain rice and pastas , and also try upping your fat intake( non saturated or trans fat kinds) this will make you feel full for longer , and add in a few good sources of protein. If you are using added sugar in tea coffee cereals , cut it out. Sugar has a habit of being where you wouldn’t expect it in refined foods. If you are using sweeteners , I wouldn’t as I feel they only keep the addiction(sugar) alive
This is not straight to the topic, but I have celiac deasease, so I can not eat meals with gluten. I must have gluten-free diet. But i did not adhere this diet strictly, I had forbidden (I hope I use good term) meals now and then and I was not 100% well physically, but mentally, too. But since I follow the diet hundred procent, I am well physically but mentally I am much better too, especially in positive symptoms of schizophrenia. I do not know if this is in relationship (diet and mental state), but probably yes, certainly a little. I know there are some articles about patients with schizophrenia, who follow gluten free-diet and they sympotms improve. But I do not know if they had celiac desease, too.
Hey @Meteor No, its weird, I retested my blood glucose levels, and they were almost normal! 117 fasting blood glucose levels. I exercised some and retested and it was much lower, I think that taking my blood test first thing in the morning had something to do with the higher numbers from the first reading.
Yes definitely think healthy diet helps
Low fat meat
Lots fruit and veg
Salads
Whole grain cereal and wholemeal bread
I have been using the myfitnesspal app for about 2 years now… I think it’s helped a lot… I get the results from my bloodwork this week so we’ll see if there are any improvements.
I don’t eat sugary foods other than fresh fruit… If I eat too much refined sugar I get really depressed. Gluten doesn’t seem to bother me but I try not to buy bread because I just find it so addicting.
I also discovered about 2 weeks ago that I am somewhat lactose intolerant. I switched to drinking Lactaid and Almond Milk and feel a lot better. I am not used to being able to breathe through my nose again
I haven’t lost much weigh over the last year, but I think my overall muscle tone is better. I eat a pretty normal amount of carbs but I have been eating the RDA of Vitamin A, C & D, limitiing saturated fat and sodium, and upping my potassium level. I track my steps with a pedometer but typically only get about 5000 +/- 2k steps most days or about 35k steps a week so I have to start finding ways to move around more despite the crappy weather (short of breaking my leg trying to ski).
eating too much food, even pasta…bread…
they turn to sugar in your body quicker…then you get a chemical inbalance in your mind/brain…causing mood disorders.
avoiding the highs and lows…eating a balanced food intake…e.g protien ( takes longer to brake down in the body ) .
take care
yeah I hear you. ive tried lots of food combination. the problem with cutting down on carbs is that you have to look to other sources of calories, namely fat & protein. while I can tell you that a high protein high fat diet is one of the best ways to loose weight , I eventually abondaned it after doing a bit of research. a high fat , high protein diet , I would not recommend over the long term as their are concerns. there is no point exchanging one set of problems for another. balance is the key.
I can’t keep my sticky fingers of pastries/danishes.
If I eat one, I’ll need to eat as many as there are available.
My mood unravels quite quickly soon after the first one, and then my weight jumps up past comfortable.
It acts just like an allergic reaction, which I’m all to familliar with, and in a day or so, the mood stabilizes and the weight drops.
Can’t understand why food allergies are not really considered in psychosis, that and infections…?
Yeah I have an issue with coffee , it gives me tactiles.
