I’m thinking about trying aripiprazole

I’ve been on it for over 10 years 15mg and I find its the one with the least side effects.

I took Abilify for just a couple of days. I had to stop because I was getting up in the middle of the night and pacing back and forth.

Ugh! That sucks!

Most of my Chinese Sz friends who take Abilify take Seroquel to help with sleep. Perhaps you could try it ? Abilify is a good AP with less side effects, don’t give up easily.

I’ve only been on aripiprazole for about a month. I started having addictions and compulsions on higher dosages like 15mg and 20mg. The addictions and compulsions have nearly went away now that I’m on 10mg but that’s just not a high enough therapeutic dosage for psychosis, so I have to combine with another AP.
No hypersexuality by the way.

It doesn’t cause much drowsiness. Much better than the other AP’s when it comes to that. It also doesn’t cause much weight and fat gain compared to other AP’s.
The cognitive side effects so far aren’t as bad as other antipsychotics.

Also in addition to what I said in my previous comment, so far it seems to work very well on my positive symptoms

I have an AP that’s working now. I had already taken Seroquel and rejected it. I was drowsy the next day after taking it. I’ll never take Seroquel again.

Glad to hear that you have found an AP which is working for you. I can understand why you don’t like Seroquel.

Way back in 2005, they tried me on 10mg of Abilify. I think it was a day later and I had to leave work because my right arm/shoulder was moving like a claw. Couldn’t control. Then, the next morning, dystonic reaction or Dystonia. So I’m allergic and can’t take Abilify ever again and don’t want to. Dystonic reaction, I was told, is rare. It is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. Easy to cure. Injection of Benadryl at a hospital. Immediately cured it. Strangely, I communicated faster for about 10 minutes and then that went away.

Dystonic reaction felt like my lower jaw was trying to rip away from my face (although that’s not what was happening) and lost some control over arm/shoulder movement and tongue/jaw movement. Very strange and painful.

I’m sorry you went through that @SlowMotional. It sounds scary. Is your new med(s) better? Are you still symptomatic?

Oh no, that Dystonic reaction only happened once. My other meds work well. Geodon gave me an Akathisia episode but it only lasted several hours and hasn’t happened again. So, Geodon and Seroquel work well for me. To the point where I wonder if she will prescribe another med at my next appointment; she seems pretty aggressive. As long as it’s not Abilify, I should be good to go.

Unless you’re referring to my current SZ symptoms. Yeah, the meds work daily to help me feel better, focus better, and give me energy. I guess I’m one of the luckier ones with no permanent side effects. Otherwise, certain SZ symptoms are engraved permanently, unless they find a cure, which isn’t likely.

I’m glad it only happened to you once. I’m especially glad your meds are helping you. Does your dr respect your input at appointments? I ask because you said she’s pretty aggressive in her treatment style.

I really struggle to communicate verbally, especially in interview-style like at a Psychiatrist appointment. I sense they sense that as signs of SZ (negative symptoms, at least). What I lack in verbal input actually seems to help them diagnose me. There are signs they look for when it comes to full-blown SZ.

They assigned me a new VA doctor and saw her for the first time earlier this month. I say she’s aggressive because no other pdoc added another AP to my Seroquel (which always works well for me for years). She’s the first one to add another AP (Geodon). We did mention my dystonic reaction to Abilify so no way she would prescribe that. So aggressive in a good way.

I couldn’t help but “google” her name, and she seems to have a bad reputation and moves around a lot. I don’t know what they’re talking about. She’s seems like a great doctor. But all doctors I’ve seen have been really good.
