I just read that the weight gain is permanent

I just read that the weight gain you get on olanzapine is permanent!?

It really bothers me as I don’t like my body at all anymore.

Initially the doc told me to count my calories then I won’t gain any weight and that was total BS. I rarely eat unhealthy sh-it and I still look like a fat woman.

I lost weight last year and have been on zyprexa years ago. So it’s not permanent. I did gain some back this year as I’ve been loving eating pastries.

The key for me was walking/exercising a lot and counting calories.

I hope you are right. I really want to do something about my body. It’s just the meds making it hard. I also read that olanzapine slows down your metabolism.

I’ll exercise for 6 months and if it doesn’t help I’ll give up and be content that I’m not at least delusional anymore.

I don’t like pastries. But I do like pizza with gyros. I eat it only once a month.

Most APs slow down your metabolism.

It’s better to do small changes that you can keep up for life than give 6 months your all and then quit.

I don’t see the point in working out if I don’t lose weight. The core reason why I started working out was to do physio and also build muscle and lose weight. I alternate every other day. Strength training and physio every other day.

And most of them APs, gives you carvings and also constipation unfortunately.
Best is calories counting if you can stick to it…I am havine trouble since I like sweets.

Luckily I don’t like sweets.

The only thing I crave is Pringles. But I don’t eat that either. As I said I treat myself to gyros.

Yes, I suffer from constipation from time to time.

When I came out of the hospital the first thing I did was to buy a gyros…lol…
It literally apear in my vision while in the hospital and was one of the best I had my entire life. Was a good treat.
Gyros are a decent mixture between protein carbs and fats.

It’s not permanent! You can lose weight on olanzapine by changing your diet. I am on olanzapine and actually I am the slimmest I have ever been now with 79kg at 191cm and I should not lose more weight. I was over 110kg a few years ago. It’s really possible!

I have changed my diet. I only eat slow carbs, no sugars. I eat lean meat with rice. I still drink milk though but I don’t think it’s detrimental to my weight.

I would count your calories.

You need the exact numbers you are consuming.

When I was losing weight I did 1500 kcal a day

Yes, I’m going to download an app. I used to count my calories but gave up because I still gained weight.

I have had no personal experience with olanzapine, but just based on what I have read, it is very difficult for some on this AP to lose weight. To say it’s “permanent” is probably a bit of a stretch though. I seriously doubt it’s impossible for anyone to lose weight on olanzapine, just can be very hard.

Thank you, it gives me hope.

Headspark used to say that he worked out and dieted and whatever and could never lose weight on Olanzapine. THen he switched aps and it just melted off.

But, I doubt it is impossible to lose weight.

It depends on what we eat. But in olanzapine I noticed that somehow get addicted to eating something that does not help lose weight. When I was not on meds I was able to reduce weight easily. I was not craving for food and at the same time I was eating good food in moderation. Now I am eating in moderation but once in a while I give in to eat weight gaining foods. So not able to see the difference in weight.

Hence, I have switched from Oleaz to Arip hope it helps me lose weight to normal level.

I can’t switch because olanzapine was the only drug that worked for me. I’m also on vraylar. Doc told me that we could taper olanzapine and increase vraylar but I’m not ready for it.

Cutting out carbs all together (including rice) can really give you a headstart in losing weight, which is great to keep motivated. As an example: I barely eat carbs on weekdays (only in some fruits), but in the weekends I allow myself a normal diet. On a monday morning the scale says roughly 2 to 3 kilo’s more than on friday morning - every week I ‘gain’ this in the weekend, and lose it throughout the week. This is impossible on calories alone, as it is roughly 7000 excess calories to gain a kilo. Check out waterweight.

I used to be on keto but it made me neurotic as hell. I had heart palpitations and was constantly shaking. I need carbs. It also gives me strength when I’m working out. Keto also made me constantly constipated.
