I got good news I was approved for disability and was wondering if u guys have any tips for being on it, I’m thinking about working part time maybe 2 days a week.
I don’t know what you mean…
be responsive to the SSA and your doctor’s requests.
Congrats. I will soon be applying for SSI not for SSDI…
I was asking if u guys have any tips for working while on disability.
You can work but you can’t make over the SGA level and you have to report your income every month. If you make more than the SGA level it counts as one of your 9 months of a trial work period. If you work more than 9 months and make above SGA you lose your benefits.
Is the sga the same for everybody ? Someone told me it depended on how much u get from disability.
They have a lot of disincentives to work when you’re on SSDI. I think you can’t have more than $2,000.00 at any time. You might want to check into that.
SGA is different for blind people, they can make more.
Don’t work unless you absolutely have to, otherwise they will decrease or even discontinue your funds and you will have an even harder time getting back on them. If you want to work, do the ticket to work program. They will train you for a job you want and will transfer your payments from Social Security to your paycheck.
SSDI is different than SSI. On SSDI you can have all the money you can get your hands on.
Well I’m only getting 975$ o month so I kind of have no choice but to work part time.
Oh if you’re making that much then they won’t put you on welfare so you should be fine to work part-time.
I don’t ever work while I’m on SSDI. At first when I first got on disability I would try to go back to work and almost lost my benefits. you will get interviewed more by the SSDI people if you work so that they can see if you can work full time and get off SSDI. be careful…maybe work “under the table” for cash.
Thanks for the advice guys.
You get more than me. I am a woman though. (Woman Card)
Do not earn over $700 a month or your medicare insurance will eventually be $800 a month. If you stay below $700 income, your medicare which you get after 2 years on the check will never cost much more than $125.
If you have children, make sure social security is paying your kid benefit. It is a monthly payment of 50% extra for the family, not per child. If you have kids with multiple mother’s, they get part of the check. Frequently, families do not get this for some reason.
See if your state will give you Medicaid coverage if you work. You pay a sliding fee premium for it but have no out-of-pocket expenses.
See if your state offers ‘Homestead Tax Break’ to disabled which allow you to get your property taxes back if you own a house. Rural Housing is really nice way to get housing financed but you have to be in qualify suburban areas or rural…They were 100% financing but I think you have to put down 10% now to quality. Homepath and Hud are both an option but requirements keep changing so you need to research it. Both require you take a new homeowner class to qualify, at least read a book on it. OK? (Check out your Economic Development District for your county to see if any rehab grants are available on a house…Rural housing USDA does have rehab loans for houses you already own for very low interest rate.) May find it easier to buy a house now, banks cannot discriminate…If you live in area with cheap houses, you talk to the people who do car loans for the bank for best rates/lowest fees.
Vocational Rehabilitation which is office at the food stamps office may allow you to finish your college degree or get some training so you can even get PT work. They will help you get PT work too and can pay some expenses. However, some states have limited this so much, there is no money to pay for anything…There is a lot of discrimination at some colleges so plan to get a note from your mental care provider, take it to disability support services and ask for assistance or at least get the note so you can decide if you need assistance later. You will be able to take tests in another room, alternative homework assignments if placed with troubled students who won’t cooperate and possibly get instructor in trouble for a whole host of ‘something is wrong with some people’ kind of abuse. I strongly recommend you do pay cash for 1-2 classes or use VOC REHAB before you get pell grant or loan at a school. If you drop classes due to being mistreated, you will have to pay back pell grant or student loan immediately…Some instructors have even been sued for mistreating people and still have their job – this is part of ‘stigma’. Can benefit to just study subject you want like using Lynda.com or take online classes instead but can still be mistreated.
If you already completed college and have student loans, ask your case manager how to get these loans forgiven. Paperwork is so complicated, some mental care clinics offer assistance in getting this done.
