I googled it and it said use two tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent. I remember growing up and using a cup. Now I use half a cup. Am I using too much?

Normally it’s indicated on the bottle how much you have to use.
they have taken a lot of the water out of the detergent, concentrated it. Read your detergent bottle.

Two tablespoons is plenty for HE washers and a small or loose filled regular load.
The recommended amount on the bottle is often more than what is really needed. It causes build.up on clothes and in the machine.
A lot of people do laundry stripping which is soaking clotges in a tub with stuff like vinegar to get the excess soap out
