High iq schizophrenia

Once again someone who represents like the one percent of schizophrenics with creativity is Tom Harrell. He composes his own jazz music and plays trumpet he is like a genius.

That’s correct, schizophrenics have lower than average IQs. This however doesn’t mean all of us are low iq. There are plenty of genius schizophrenics out there.

I wasn’t a genius but I was in the gifted/talented program as a kid, was my high school valedictorian, and graduated magna cum laude with my master’s degree…but, yeah, sza has dumbed me down quite a bit. Now I mostly irritate doctors with my medical knowledge (I was on track to medical school before I got too sick to handle it…I settled for becoming a registered dietitian). They hate it when you understand their language and don’t need them to read the results of an EKG. But now I’m lucky if I take a shower once a week and attend my clubhouse every weekday…

Szs may very well score high on an iq test but then it becomes a matter of balancing it with other aspects of our personality.

Forgot about Darell Hammond of SNL lore. underwhelming academically (2.1 gpa) he was a druggy and had ptsd. High IQ? maybe, or maybe just a good actor with sz. nevertheless, throw him on the list.

Academics or (former achievement) before schizophrenia is not a good predictor of success I think.

I don’t know. Seems random or depends on the severity. Each person is different as well as their story.

I’ve been inpatient and outpatient combined like 15-17 times. I haven’t been to them in several years perhaps. Vraylar keeps me stable. It keeps me from losing touch of reality more and keeps my mood stablized. Same with Cymbalta I guess.

It’s almost like throwing darts randomly at a board trying to hit something.

Before schizophrenia my IQ was 110
After years of frying my brain with meds and fighting this awful illness I can barely remember anything

However I can function normally (for some reason)

I’ve never done a full proper iq test but form the online ones I’ve done they usually say I have a higher than average iq… Not to boast :smirk:

I feel the same. Life is it’s own IQ test.

I’m a typical aspie in that I have a large adaptive functioning < IQ gap. You get the best of me here. You don’t see the me that has to have help keeping the flat clean. That struggles with everyday tasks most people take in their stride.

I was a smart kid

But in the intervening years probably average now

What I have left is unconventional which a lot of things like jumping through hoops is rendered impossible

You seem quite intelligent to me

I also don’t believe that schizophrenics on average have higher IQ. I heard a lady say IRL that ā€œit’s the geniuses who gets szā€, but after being in and out of several institutions, all people seem to have normal intelligence, that’s my judgement at least.

Don’t know anything about whether it lowers IQ for all schizophrenics but for myself, my intelligence took a hit after my brain started acting funny (when there wasn’t psychosis yet, but there was a shift in how I perceived the world years before diagnosis, which probably was the beginning of becoming schizophrenic.)

My overall IQ was measured at 125 back in the day.

After psychosis and all that, I think I’ve dropped a couple points. However, I do this thing where I feel like I’m smarter than I really am sometimes and aim too high. Like trying to apply to grad school, for instance. No clue if I’m cut out for it these days.

At least you are trying! It’s the only thing that matters.
