Many years ago I used to go to one food line.
I sometimes use the food bank towards the end of the month when money gets short. It’s hard to buy enough food nowadays cuz prices have gone up so much with inflation. Last week I got a food box at church and it came with a 2 foot frozen salmon!
Food banks kept me fed as a kid - it’s why I support them so strongly as an adult. That and school food programs for kids.
When I was psychotic and living in a homeless shelter I went to a food bank once
It was a very difficult and traumatic experience - it goes against everything I stand for - to be independent and have self-respect
I went to a food bank once a few years ago. I mostly got cans of vegetables which I didn’t want so I never went back again.
I think that there is nothing wrong in going to food banks, if there is a need for food. People can still have their self-respect. It is the high inflation time and in some places people must choose between heating their place or buying food. Energy costs are high.
People go to food banks in Europe, the USA, Britain and elsewhere, high inflation has caused all prices to go up … here is a video from Southern Florida …
There is no shame in using a food bank if the need is genuine. Conversely, you should support your local food bank if you’re able to. Families should not have to go hungry.
Are you trying to say that people who need help at the food bank can’t have any self respect and should feel ashamed?! I’m very offended by this. People sometimes have hardships. They lose jobs, they become ill, things happen. There is nothing wrong with going to a food bank if you can’t afford food. Jobs pay very little and life is expensive. Not everyone is wealthy and problem free. Most aren’t. And not everyone is able to go to college etc to get into that better situation. Life’s tough. Not everyone gets to be rich.
People that need to use food banks have plenty of self respect.
Lots of people out there who were quite well off and who are now gaining some humility in food bank line-ups. Not criticizing - life is uncertain.
I agree! Things happen in life. It’s not always fair.
Anything can happen in the world. For example, our Ukrainian refugees go to the food bank line-ups. People left Ukraine because they wanted to survive. I have also seen some videos from Ukraine where in some areas people come to food distribution places regularly. There is no good infrastructure because it was destroyed in the war, people have no good places to sleep their nights.
In chinks of the US you will begin seeing longwr food pantry lines again. The government cut the extra food stamps for covid. So you have people going to less than $23 a month in food help. Or 0.
It is disgusting.
I used to go to food pantry .
A local church organises it so you can get groceries for just $5.
Things that the shop would have thrown out.
I went there a couple of years but haven’t needed it lately thankfully.
