i was 2 years on nicotine replacement - lozenges, patches

patches are good for keeping you on a level - which you have as a non smoker

What is the hardest part? The move from cigs to nicotine replacement or coming off the nicotine replacement?

If i found any of it hard i would be smoking

i am a chicken

i had a cig every time i thought about it (kind of every 15 minutes)

I gave up and struggled many times

this time i had enough and it all fell into place

the crutch was important
psychologically
i can’t say how much but it is i think the only reason for me staying stopped.

give your self time

the 2 years i was on very high dose patch and lozenges (24 h i sucked them in my sleep) - to eventually just quitting patches (slowly) the most unnoticeable is coming off patches… do it very gradually

i had a button in my mouth for about a year to replace lozenges

I’d like to give up vaping too. Just not at the moment. One day.

That is really good advice @Thanna!

See am off tobacco completely for about 18 months now. All I do is vape. But I would like to get off vaping too.

So you advise patches and lozenges. Cool. Will invest in them.

Patches are 100% the only way to teach normal

the thing is i found i needed an instant hit (which i got with high dose lozenges)

but then i needed those ALL the time (as i smoked all the time) because i was a heavy smoker i used a lot of nicotine

the other crucial advice is that you don’t stop patches or lozenges at all if you have a lapse

in your case vaping

it is not a do or die either or.

same goes with cigs

if you call it all or nothing there is no way back after a minor slip up

it can all be ruined so quickly

just continue as you were

i wouldn’t worry about overdose = you will know if this happens - never happened to me on a possible 40 -60 mg (a guess) lozenges total plus 20mg patches

1 mg lozenges are not too hard to quit - cut them in half near the end
i reduced to a small dose patch, then upped the patch as i reduced lozenge strength

I like the not all or nothing sentiment. Is a really good approach I think.

it’s essential

junk everything in and buy a couple of packs of 20 to get you through the weekend is the alternative

how long have you vaped for?

About 3 years now. Vape pretty heavy too. Not had tobacco in 18 months I think.

very cool - you have basically done it…

congrats!!

it is important not to rush it

it’s still an oral fixation - hard enough to go on a diet - same sort of thing

at least you can also get no nicotine vape

Thanks @Thanna!

Think I’ll stay away from zero nic vaping. I am much more concerned about the chemicals in the vape solution/flavourings than the actual nicotine. I want to give my lungs a break.

Thing is I am very dependent on nicotine for that buzz it gives. It is the buzz I think I will miss. But the thought of having healthy lungs is very attractive. I don’t really get drunk or anything so I won’t get intoxication smoking urges.

Question: do you like the smell of smoke now you’ve quit? Some ex smokers hate the smell. I still love it! (But I don’t miss the smell of smoke on my clothes and hair)

vaping is so much less damage than smoking though.

your lungs have been healing more in the last 18 months or so than you think… have a look at some quit stats.

vaping is terrible for giving people nicotine buzz… you don’t get that much from cigs other than the obvious initial satisfaction of abruptly ending detox buzz

i have seen an ad for people who ‘take it to another level’ with vaping
at which point nicotine becomes more of a gateway drug than it ever was

i panic sometimes with the smell - the same i would if there was a fire… alarm bells… sometimes i like the smell but usually i worry about passive smoking - my mum and sis smoke and i am round there a lot.

I am doing this myself. I am going to buy gum today. I vape a lot so I don’t know how it will go but I need to stop vaping I heard of slight risks.

I hope you do good Jimbob.

I’m going to try just a few quick vapes in the morning and then gum rest of the day. (I love vaping with a coffee in the morning)

good luck jimbob, my friend is trying to cut down and using the vapes, he recently developed a bad cough so he started putting filter tips in his rollies and using his vape more

you can get patches free from the chemist Jimbob, they are amazing and it was so easy to cut down and stop, i didn’t even notice i had stopped, it took a couple of goes and then i stopped for about a year and then i started again (dont ask) then i stopped again 6 mths later, has been over 5 yrs now but yeah, id say patches were the easiest, you just get a rash but it goes away after a couple of days, i was just moving them around.
