Has anybody tried Meditation for schizophrenia? Does it reduce the voices?
Meditation might even make things worse for schizophrenics.
it depends on the individual. For some, it makes it worse. For others, after time it provides a sense of well being and peace.
You can’t know unitl you try. Some types of meditation are meant to be worse than others. Being mindful as a state of being doesn’t necessarily mean sitting down and concentrating on the breath, but being aware of breath and action at all times. It brings you to the moment, so even if you can’t sit down and ‘meditate’ emptying the mind of constant thought, then becoming aware of your normal breathing in everyday life can be meditative in its own right.
It takes time to build up meditation. Having racing thoughts needs awhile to brake. Take it slow, like a couple of minutes and build it up by a minute at first. You can’t jump in at the deep end and expect to know how to swim without practice. It is the same with meditaiton.
Good luck.
If you’re very severely ill and are constantly hearing voices then I don’t know if you should start meditation just yet. Better to take your meds and do therapy beforehand.
I think meditation is very beneficial though.
Mindfulness however can help everybody.
I agree, if you are hearing voices constantly then attempting meditation might not be a good idea. If the meds work and stop it then meditation might be for you.
It helps with awareness to the voices
I’ve been meditating daily this past week and it hasn’t helped with much yet… I’m not noticing anything except I do feel more peaceful and I think it helps with sleep.
I’m with @everhopeful on this one. I’ve only meditated like 2-3 times in my life, and what was followed about 30 mins later was a panic attack. I think meditation highly increases dopamine which could trigger a small episode or an anxiety/panic attack
It can your oxygenate your brain which is a common feature in schizophrenics
factually
it is amazing
at first i thought i have no thinking after the first time i realized that these voices are my own thinking
but i no longer do it i better do my prayer
Try it if you can concentrate.
There is a distinct difference between guided and unguided… letting the mind wander unrestricted is my kryptonite. I can accidently slip out of my body breathing too deeply so i cant do either… but it can be helpful… you can go on youtube and find some guided meditation videos… like i said it can be helpful…just be careful.
No, and several studies have shown meditation may actually make psychosis worse. Meditation is about inward focus. A lot of people with psychosis need to become more grounded in the outer world, not the inner.
That said meditation was very helpful to me in that it helped me let go of bad thoughts, one big element of it is learning to view thoughts without judgement and let them go. So it was helpful to me. But I also tend to hallucinate vividly during meditation which is not always pleasant. So it’s a mixed bag for me.
@catsrcool: I agree. Mindfulness and body scan is supposed to be less triggering and more grounding. It’s about being present in the moment and can help to put a little distance between you and the voices. Wouldn’t advise starting it while in crisis though. Best to Take meds and be less stressed
