Haloperidol is worse than schizophrenia itself

From all people I know personally who are mentally ill has a negative opinion of haloperidol. One said that she couldnt eat because of hand tremor and jaw locking and other who is currently on Max dose of clozapine said that haloperidol is a pretty bad drug. I wish I lives in your country, sadly every country still uses haloperidol widely (are you from Canada) cause i heard haloperidol is given longterm med for around 50% of patients in mental wards in the USA

Well I think clozapine was hell and worse than schizophrenia. I went from 110 pounds to 170 pounds in 6 months, i developed severe tachycardia and needed a heart drug, i would throw up in my sleep and choke on it. Doesnā€™t mean Iā€™m gonna say that clozapine should be banned. That would be crazy.

Clozapine actually was banned for some period of time before it came back

Here they put everyone on it first thing, because it is cheap and fast and strong. It knocks people out. If people respond badly, they are switched. I think psychiatrists also tend to overdo it very much with the dosing. Wanting to avoid risk. I personally think that is stupid. It makes people quit meds, because they have so many side effects, that it is intolerable. Whereas lower doses, keep more quality of life. And make it easier to stay on meds, if you really need them. And withdraw if you donā€™t.

yes i think dosing is huge. I was on 60mg a day and i had severe akathesia and lost my close up visionā€¦needed bifocalsā€¦now iā€™m on 6mg and it is great.

My psychiatrist once said that as a doctor, he wanted me (and others) on nice high doses, so that they were safe and stable. I told him his nice high doses made me want to jump off a bridge and throw the meds back at him. And this wasnā€™t making it safer and stabler for anyone. Which made him conclude I was a risk, and indeed needed the nice high dose. :expressionless:

I canā€™t imagine why you want anyone on 60mg haldol. That is cruel.

I was like a zombie on 15mg of Haldol as my only AP. Now I take Loxapine with 2.5 mg of Haldol as a PRN and it works great for my voices

Yeah he was an old guy. 80 probably. He was used to the 1950s doses.

I have been on 1 mg Haldol for 42 years. No TD. Earned a pension on it. Also take 100 Seroquel for sleep now. No big side effects but have residual symptoms.

I donā€™t want to criticise or praise any meds over an other. But Iā€™ve been on the Haldol like drug Clopixol 400 mgs every othrr week with few side effects for 26 years The only side effect that itā€™s causing is s some dystonia so I take two antiparkinson pills(Akineton) for that. Besides of that I take two 300 mgs Seroquel ir pills. I feel calm, relaxed, in control without any psychotic symptoms. I now do feel the best ever in my 29 years history of schizophrenis.
So God bless all of you.

Iā€™ve been injected with Haldol in Hospital settings several times and I actually did well on it.
No issues.

In my opinion akathisia is just as bad as SZ. Thankfully we have newer meds that donā€™t cause that as much.

Akathisia didnā€™t leave me in a constant state of terror. Annoying AF, yes, but that I can cope with.

It does for me, I get lots of weird stuff along with the restlessness. Guess itā€™s different for everyone.

Haloperidol has been a life saver for me as well. I have been relatively stable on a maintenance dose of 1mg for over 10 years. I do yearn to be off medication some day but donā€™t know when that will be. I know that I have some emotional blunting as well as some degeneration to my cognitive abilities. My short term memory has also gone to ā– ā– ā– ā–  since taking haldol (or is that the illness?). Best of luck to everyone.
