Last night my students were still doing extra credit presentations in my lecture periods, and one student gave a great presentation on schizophrenia.
I’ve had a few students do schizophrenia as their presentation topic in the past, but last night was the first time I saw a student break things down into positive, negative and cognitive symptoms. Usually when students do schizophrenia as their topic the only symptoms they really talk about are delusions and hallucinations, oversimplifying the illness.
This student who did the great presentation last night revealed to the class that he has schizophrenia. He said that he talked about it, revealing his diagnosis, because there’s so much stigma surrounding the illness, and he wanted to fight that stigma and show his classmates that people with schizophrenia are regular people.
