He told me to continue with “Greensleeves” because it’s such good practice and to move on to some 6th string practice exercises as well.
I am happy to be moving on to 6th string(E,F,G) notes because I am eager to make progress, but at the same time am a little worried about it for a couple reasons. #1 Because the higher I go on strings, the harder the finger stretch is for 3rd finger. #2, right now it is very difficult for me to distinguish between the notes of 5th string(A,B,C) and 6th string(E,F,G) because of the way they are both below the staff in standard notation.
He brought up moving thumb behind neck, which I have been worried about from the beginning, because I was afraid I may have to change my technique eventually and it might throw everything all off.
I probably won’t be doing a whole lot of practice today because I got very little sleep.
Spunds like you are making progress. The 6th string sounds so sexy. Really important string. I mean. They are all important but the 6th just adds that solid and needed bass tone. Your finger coordination will come with time. It may be hard to get your fingers to go in the right position but after a while you develop muscles you never knew you would use and your fingers will know exactly what to do.
What you could Bowans is buy a book of simple classical guitar pieces but it could ruin you for rock and roll. I’m not really sure. I played only classical the years I played, which was on and off my whole life, and started learning the blues a couple years ago but a lot of rock and roll just seems simple and stupid, and I still like the blues. Try and make sense of that. I just ordered a 1940’s songbook but I don’t know if I can play the songs, they aren’t specially adapted for guitar, maybe just piano, and voice.
I played only in the keys of C and G until three years ago. The key of C all notes natural. The key of G F notes are sharper. Now I’m used to the keys of C, G, D, A, E, and F. I haven’t encountered much music in any other keys. And being self taught I really play by instinct.
