Guitar lesson # 3

Well, I convinced my instructor to leave last weeks chord assignment for this week as well since I had limited time to practice them.

So my assignment for this week, in addition to working in last weeks chords, is to practice songs incorporating the new notes G and A on string G. I find the new addition particularly confusing because of a couple things.

#1 I already have a G on little string E…this adds confusion
#2 All previous notes have either been open or on fret 1 and 3, The new A note is on second fret which mixes up my hand coordination a bit.
#I now have 3 strings to try to keep track of with both my plucking hand and my fretting hand.

Anyway, so now I am using G and A on G string, B,C, D on B string and E, F , G on little E string to incorporate for my currently assigned songs. And of course, I also have to learn how to recognize them reasonably quickly in standard notation. This is all moving a little to fast for my liking to be honest . Every week I feel like I am not going to have enough time for my poor sz brain to fully grasp it all. At the beginning of the week I feel overwhelmed each time :flushed:.

I feel like I’m adding things when I have a rudimentary grasp on the things I just learned the week before. I wish I could schedule lessons for every 2 weeks instead of one, but that’s not how it works. You pay for a month of weekly lessons up front.

Wish me luck.

Thanks for reading!

Good luck wearing your G-string out!

Try to communicate that you’re getting overwhelmed. Because it is making a chore our of what should be an exciting experience.

You’re right to some extent chordy…but theres really no point of the weekly lesson if he doesn’t add something…so I kind of get it. It just doesnt seem like a week is enough to get things down pat for me. Maybe I’m slow at it. I don’t know.

Maybe its good to be pushed a bit . we will see. :slightly_smiling_face:

The secret to being a good performing artist is repetition, repetition and repetition. Until you could play it in your sleep.

Don’t forget to take breaks. If you hit it hard then you may experience some serious burnout before you progress.

Best of luck. I love reading about your progress.

YOu are very correct here Chordy. Repetition definitely plays a major role. Getting songs down pat takes playing them over, and over and over again.

And the same holds true for recognizing the notes in standard notation.

I have always used TAB for the banjo. Basically I prefer to play the song rather than let the song play me.

Us banjo players can get away with that though.

I’ll probably learn that better at some point too…so many things to cover…one thing at a time.

Don’t worry man it gets easier with time.

When you get better at chord transitioning there will be certain patterns of chords that you gravitate towards, or that sound good to you.

I would ask for your teacher to play some songs for you, give a little demonstration for inspiration!

Work hard, but remember this is supposed to be fun. If it’s not and you’re stressed, take a break. Clear your mind by doing something else for a while before trying again

I serendipitously tried starting guitar lessons around the time you did. I only managed the one session. It’s so hard to push into compared to the easy dopamine hits of the web!

There’s a strategy I saw, called the “20 second rule”, where you make the negative impact habits like TV watching 20 seconds harder to do (throw the remote batteries somewhere in the room,) and make guitar playing 20 seconds easier (put the guitar and tabs within easy reach of a comfy spot,) and you’ll acclimate to doing the thing.

I am not doing this because it’s hard to find the right place in the tangle of my life to put guitar lessons.
