Ive been learning japanese off and on since I was twelve. Just found a really good app for learning and ive been blowing through lessons. Not even making many mistakes! Its a dream of mine to go to japan one day.
Anyone else know a second language? Its hard ! I struggled with spanish in high school, cheated in tests or slept through my classes because i was overmedicated. So i got steady C’s in that class. Im surprised I passed tbh.
I took 4 years of Spanish, in high school and college combined. I forget most of it haha “use it or lose it”, as they say.
Also took 2 semesters of German in college, that language is cool IMO. I think a lot of the foreign languages classes depend on the instructor/teacher.
I speak Dutch (native), English, French and Spanish.
I can also understand German.
Edit: I learned French and English in High School and uni. Learned Spanish online and through language classes at Instituto Cervantes. I followed a 50 hour Summer School in German.
I have worked in Brussels and Geneva and studied in France as well. I’ve worked in NYC and Singapore (English). And spent last winter 3 months in Barcelona
My dad has been learning german for many years. Hes much older and struggles though since he started so late in life. But hes determined. We have a few german friends that came over and stayed with us many times for vacations. So he gets plenty of practice talking to them.
I have a friend who im learning japanese with so we share tips with each other and discuss our lessons together.
Learning a foreign language is only one aspect when visiting another country which doesn’t use Latin script for writing. The use of food utensils, cuisine, customs, currency exchange, writing, culture, clothing, history, architecture, religion, music and a whole plethora of aspects need to be taken into account.
For example in Japan, Japanese do not shake hands unless for business greetings. Japanese people bow and wear the Kimono. To purchase meals, one has to use the Japanese Yen and eat with chopsticks. Also, Shintoism can be seen all around the traditional architecture of Japanese pagodas whether in Edo, Tokyo, Nagoya, etc…
