Foreign Languages

Do you speak more than one language or would you like to learn one? I’m trying to learn French from scratch. I can already speak some German.

Hola

I don’t speak fluently in any other language other than English but I know bits and pieces of a few.
Especially Spanish.

Thanks @Sarah. @Bowens I was going to learn Spanish at the university, but the books were like $600. For French there are no required books. As my father was Cajun, I thought I would try French. It seems easier to me

I love French as a language, so much so I had my son learn it in primary school. Sadly he didn’t continue with it.

Keep going with your French @anon54988740 .

I studied Spanish on and off all my life for 51 years starting at age 10 and I’m still not fluent but I’m pretty close.

That’s great to hear. I guess unless you live where the language is spoken and you have to use it it’s more difficult to develop it.

@anon54988740, your words are oh so true. And that’s why I have a dream of moving to Mexico someday soon. And it has to be soon because I am getting older.

I tried learning Spanish in 2019 when my brain was sedated on Zyprexa/Risperdal. My concentration and memory seem better now that I’m on Abilify. With the French, I’m having trouble with the pronunciations and listening to speakers.

LS! I speak my native language Dutch. I also speak English, I have got a Cambridge CPE. And I speak French at level B1. I can speak German too. When I was 50 I tried unsuccesfully to learn Moroccan Arabic.

I just speak English these days. I used to try to learn other languages. I’m not bad with languages I got quite a bit of practice when I was young.

Well I’m 62, and never spoken French before this weekend. It gives me something to do. If I should decide again to finish a Bachelor’s of Arts degree, there is a foreign language proficiency requirement.

The university is currently only doing Spanish and French.

I would like to speak/write English as if it was my mother tongue.

You speak English very well. My father was Cajun French from Louisiana in the US. This sparks my interest in French…

Mon père était un français cajun de la Louisiane aux États-Unis. Cela suscite mon intérêt pour le français.
