This is a totally different work environment than what I’m used to. I’m basically part of a restaurant management team at the university. It’s very lively. I deal mostly with students and food service workers.
There are A LOT of policies and procedures to learn. I’m hoping my brain will cooperate.
I need better work shoes. Too much friction. My poor heels.
I need to be on time. I’m grateful that my previous job was so flexible on this, but most places are not.
Students are really young. I was 22 when I first started working at colleges. Now I’m 42. I could have had my own kid in college at this point.
Anyway, I don’t want to screw this up for a variety of reasons. I took a lot of time off in my last job due to mental health, but I have to assume my new employer won’t be as flexible. If I can make it 12 months, I can look into FMLA, where I may be approved to take intermittent time off due to chronic illness. It’s not ideal because then of course everyone ends up knowing, and it can lead to resentment. But it IS an option if it means I can keep working.
I’m not working currently, and frankly most jobs are really demoralizing. The first few weeks are engaging because everything is new, but after months pass frankly you just watch the clock hoping for the day to end. I hope this job has some perks and it doesn’t get too tedious.
Sounds like the pressure is on a bit. Dont be too heavy on yourself. Just go with the flow and be open to learning as you go. You’ll learn the finer details over time.
