Does it bother you when someone calls you sir or ma'am?

i remember when i was in my 20’s and would go through the drive thru at a fast food place, and they would sometimes give my food, and say " have a nice day, sir" and it bothered me, i would think jeez im not that old. it was always some teenager working the drive through saying it.

but now today when that happens im not so averse to it haha. im like yeah show some respect you little punk haha. it no longer bothers me, and it kind of makes me feel good. funny how things change.

how bout you?

It used to bother me, but now that I’m 61, it doesn’t bother me much anymore.

I got that face where people think they can just be cavalier with me.

I get called Sir, Boss, Dude, Chief, Buddy…and I’m okay with all of it.

Being called ma’am doesn’t bother me. Never has. I just see it as the other person being respectful. It doesn’t mean I’m old.

I remember the first time some kid called me “sir”. It felt a little odd but I took it in stride and it actually felt a little good; like you say, it can be a term of respect. Now, I get it all the time, especially at work. I work in an army reserve building as a janitor and a lot of the young soldiers call me “sir”.

It can be a negative thing though. Sometimes I’ll be talking to someone on the phone and I’ll make a mistake and embaress myself and they will say “sir” in a tone of voice, that means act your age.

The funny thing is that I’ve never called anyone else sir that I can recall.

I dont like being called sir/ma’am more because I don’t like being gendered like that. But overall I don’t hate it

I call all my lady friends ma’am out of respect, too.

‘Buddy’ said by strangers has a ‘tard’ connotation if referred to me I think.

I don’t get called ma’am that often and I’m not bothered by it but I sometimes say sir or ma’am to people older than me.

I was raised to respond with yes ma’am/no ma’am, yes sir/no sir.

It used to be a habit but not so much anymore.

A friend of mine said he hated being called Sir. I don’t really see the problem. They’re just trying to be polite and address you with respect.

I call everyone Sir or Ma’am no matter they’re age. I consider it a sign of respect. It’s a lot better than “Hey you!”
