Do you like being called Ma'am or Sir?

I recently found I do not.

As I’ve gotten a little older more people call me “ma’am”.

That’s was fine.

Until yesterday my favorite guy at the grocery store was talking to me and had to have said “yes ma’am, no ma’am, thank you ma’am” like fifteen times!

When he walked away, I realized he’s probably 20 and just trying to be respectful,

But damn.

It hurts.

I call women ma’am all the time but I hate being called sir. It really pisses me off

Yeah, when people call me sir it is usually done respectfully so I don’t mind it. I get called sir a lot because I work in an Army Reserve office building with a lot of young soldiers and that’s how they usually address me.

it’s a southern thing here…shows respect. I always say “ma’am” to cashiers or bank tellers, etc.

Some people say boss also. I don’t like being called boss either

I guess it just depresses me that we have such a hierarchical system worked into our language

We should all just call each other person.

I don’t mind it, as long as it’s used in a respectful or kind way. Like a store clerk saying, “Have a good day, ma’am.” Totally fine with that.

But when they use “ma’am” when talking down to you… Yeah, not ok.

No, it reminds me of being arrested while drunk.

It doesn’t bother me being called sir. Except when it’s someone I know well. I remember my cousin used to call me Sir on Facebook. It kind of annoyed me. It was like we hadnt known each other our whole lives or something. He died a few years back from a fall from those boards they have for theatre productions. I seem to want to say rafters, but I don’t think thats right. Anybody know the word I’m searching for? Anyway he fell and then died at the hospital. He was setting up for a college play.

Catwalk maybe?
fifteenboards

Scaffold? Fifteen

It doesn’t bother me. It’s a cultural thing here. I live in Appalachia
