Ma'am, it just might be historically racially insensitive too

I’ve decided I don’t like being called Ma’am. Just because you’re waiting on me, doesn’t mean I see you as my servant. and also, it’s Wham, bam, thank you, Ma’am! Can’t even leave the house.

I call all women maa’m as a sign of respect to their person just like I call all men sir for the same reason.

@SkinnyMe, exactly. Those are terms of respect. @Daze, people in service positions who say ma’am or sir are not bowing down or demeaning themselves. You are kind of inventing problems where there are none.

I dont feel respected when someone says them to me. I feel old.

How is that racially insensitive? If you don’t like it then you don’t like it, but don’t act like it’s the same thing as being called racial slurs or being discriminated against for no reason other than your skin color.

Someone else can explain it better than me.

I’ve heard it mentioned.

Ma’am is so close to mom or mum in pronunciation. Feeling like you are everyone’s mother would be quiet the task.

I’m not really fond of ‘lady’ either. ha. But, people on here know I say ‘honey’ a lot, and should probably stop doing that.

I personally believe everyone deserves to be called by what they want to be called. Its just… strangers get a free pass because it’s just impossible to know. But thank you for sharing what makes you uncomfortable, it can be quiet difficult for me to do so! :slightly_smiling_face:

You made the claim, so defend it. How is being called “ma’am” racially insensitive?

Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but it annoys me when people act like their preferences are really some social justice crisis when there are real issues in this world that need addressing.

I don’t think it needs explanation. See my original post.

It does. I see that you don’t like it, and I respect that, but that’s not the same thing as racial insensitivity.

There’s nothing racially insensitive about saying Ma’am.

I know that, you know that, Daze knows that.

She just said it to be controversial.

Ha. Whatever. I grew up singing Mamie’s little babies like shortenin’ shortenin’, Mamie’s little babies like shortening bread. It was culturally significant.

Daze I hope you know calling you Ma’am has nothing to do with race.

Whatever you just said doesn’t make it so either.

Race has nothing to do with it, you either misunderstood or mislead us with the title.

The title of this post under your false evaluation

Says

Just might be insensitive

Take it as you will.

Or better yet
Just drop it.

ma’am is short for madam which originally was a french word that translates to “my lady”
