How do they invent the medicines we use?
It is science. Science relies a lot on observation.
Maybe they test on rats high on MDMA…
Yeah but animals don’t get schizophrenia, so what do they test it on?
chemical compounds are extracted from certain plant abstracts then crushed and then mixed to determine concentration levels that define the dosage. the dried powered is then fused in tablets or left as is in a liquid form. However, the main syrup of the drug is tested on human patient trials to determine efficacy.
Animals can get psychotic.
They give animals brain damage, usually by editing their genes. Then eventually if everything goes right they begin human trials.
Schizophrenic symptoms have not been observed in animals. Not sure about psychosis.
A lot of discoveries are accidental. Like someone mentally ill was taking some cold medicine and it helped his mental illness. So they discovered that something in a decongestant could help the mentally ill.
I know they mimic autism in rats by giving the mothers depakote when they are pregnant.
The first antipsychotic was discovered this way. It was initally prescribed for something else.
I want to invent medicines I’m going back to school as soon as I have a year of normal mentality
Clozapine?
What was it prescribed for?
Chlorpromazine. It’s also an antihistamine and was used for nausea and allergies among other things.
That’s good to know. I was always under the impression that clozapine was the first ap from what I’ve read but I just checked it out on Wikipedia now
Clozapine was the first atypical antipsychotic. The first antipsychotics were the typical APs.
Well that makes me feel great about taking daily 1000mg of Depakote for the last 10 years.
I’m guessing it’s only an issue in pregnancy.
I wonder if it’s possible to make a third generation of antipsychotic? One with even less frequency of EPS. Or maybe the definitions of the generations are such that it’s not possible.
Indian snakeroot is where they are isolating the resperine which is a pde10a inhibitor for cognitive symptoms. The pipeline is kind of dry maybe I should email a senator or something
They do, they become agitated, withdrawn, bad memory, bad cognition and not social.
Scientists induce sz in rats genetically and by using drugs like Psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, etc
They have tried, unsuccessfully. Seroquel is one of the atypical APs that seem to work a little differently. It works more through serotonin. And it is also maybe the AP with the least EPS and lowest risk for TD. At least one of the best in both those areas.
