Do you think antipsychotics really work?

Or do you think the psychosis just has to run it’s course and the meds really can’t stop the psychosis?

I am really scared there comes a day gulpin down risperidones doesnt work anymore. Also welcome to the forum.

There’s no such thing as psychosis “running it course”. Before antipsychotic meds were invented people lived out their remaining days in horrific asylums.

I think they work to a point. Complete remission of symptoms is rare.

They’ve kept me going for over a quarter century. I function as well as most neurotypicals where it counts and even better in some ways. Couldn’t do this without my meds. Hell, I’d be dead without them.

May I ask what meds worked for you?

It works for some people and for others it doesnt.

But yeah, generally they do work in majority of the cases.

They don’t get rid of the voices for me, but the evidence seems to be that it works for most people. Am I getting that right?

Welcome to The Forum, by the way

Most of them at some point. Clozaril was a high and low point. Worked well while it was working, but I’m one of those freaks who had it wipe out his white blood cells. It was good until it tried to kill me. Lowest point was Zyprexa: Explosive weight gain. Still have the diabetes. Been stable on Geodon for nigh on a decade minus a short blip with Rexulti, which just didn’t work as well for me.

I think they really work, but I know they can stop working after a period of time. Olanzapine worked for about 15 years for me, then stopped working, I became psychotic, started Lurasidone and my psychosis went away. For me psychosis never goes away on its own.

May I ask what you experience during your psychosis, what are your most bothersome symptoms?

I had auditory, visual and tactile hallucinations, and a delusion trying to explain it all. I was a real mess.

Did you deal with negative symptoms when you were actively psychotic?

Not really, my problem was the positives. I use to have depression for a number of years but that faded away. I’ve never been a really emotional person, I prefer solitude, but I am not depressed and I don’t feel like I am experiencing any kind of debilitating negative symptoms.

Welcome to the forum! Antipsychotics have helped me in some aspects but not others. I think it’s the standard care for psychosis because it works better than anything else. I don’t think schizophrenia runs it’s course and stops for good. I think it’s life long

just have to find some good meds, they do help if you’re on ones that work for you

Honestly antipsychotics are like throwing darts at a dartboard blindfolded. I had to go through like 5 of them until I found one that helped me without messing me up with side effects, but now that I’m on a good one I credit a lot of my recovery to it.

The antipsychotics work, but they work like chemotherapy for cancer patients. The cure is almost as bad as the disease.

They definitely work. That as well as insight and resilience.
