Do you think antipsychotics really work?

They are helping me… at first I really didn’t want to take them… but after the third episode I know I need them.

I was totally out of it. Ap’s stabilized me even though I had to try several of them before I found the right ones. It took about 8 years on them before I felt normal again. I’m not still back to 100% but I’m slowly getting there.

If it weren’t for antipsychotics we would still have insane asylums. That would be a horrible nightmare far worse than the disease itself.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, they really work. I was psychotic for a long time in my most recent episode until I was put on an AP and then shortly thereafter I came out of it. And I haven’t had an episode since I’ve been on one consistently. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Yes they work. Ive gone from completely psychotic then one forced injection and lights out then when i wake up im completely fine

That’s amazing, can I ask what shot they gave you?

I really have no idea. Its happened maybe half dozen times and I never found out.

I can tell you I’ve been turned 180 degrees around after a shot of Haldol. I don’t like it long-term, but it’s the best rescue med to get me out of psychosis.

They do for some people but at a cost. While they minimised my symptoms they made me illiterate. My IQ dropped, so I stopped taking them after 5 months (with the agreement of my medical team). I still do have symptoms but have learnt how to manage it myself. Something , medication precludes you from
doing

Without APs
I would be locked
in a hospital
or in jail

Medication helps in my case but it doesn’t take away all symptoms. Still hear voices.

Yeah without meds I’d have no insight and probably be locked up by now or homeless. I recently went off meds for a few days and my insight went away almost completely

I love aps!!!

They are so much fun

Anyways yea they work. Sometimes. Idk. Tbh.

But it could be

They work to keep you out of jail or the hospital, and regain some sanity but they will suck your health dry or will to live out of your soul, it’s really about finding a med that the side effects are tolerable vs the symptoms of sz on a day to day basis, some people on here have had a great recovery, some haven’t, it’s all up to chance.

Yes they really work. Once you and your pdoc do the hard work of finding out which ones work for you.

for me they work but it took some time finding the right ones. I think if you not on meds then the psychosis will go up and down all your life i think. I don’t think it would stop it would just get worse over time.

For me, they didn’t work for 33 years. Five years ago, my excellent pdoc decided to put me on 3 AP’s and that worked. I suspect that he was one of the first pdoc’s to do it (use 3 AP’s together that is).

Which ones are you on?
