There is probably a lot of uninteresting microbial life out there. It took four billion years for life to reach the stage it has on modern earth. And if there are intelligent civilizations, probably there are a lot of stone age cultures out there too. There probably aren’t that many advanced civilizations. If there are advanced civilizations, they might not have our values. They might do things to us like farm us for useful products and substances they can glean from our bodies, maybe useful organs like eyes and lungs.
@insidemind I hope this isn’t feeding into your delusions about aliens and space travel…do you think you’re unstable? are you on meds?
I’m a stable schizophrenic on meds.
I think interstellar travel is realistic enough, but I would expect this to be of the “classic” variety. This means decades or centuries of in-flight time through the empty void between stars, on board a habitat vessel that can support several generations of settlers in near-zero gravity. Not pretty, but it would get you there eventually.
The true question is - why would anyone want to do such a thing, given the uncertainty of what the destination will really be like?
P.S. A Star-Trek style Warp drive is simply not a realistic expectation given current scientific understanding. Of course we can’t rule out that we are still missing a fundamental piece of the puzzle which might permit some form of effectively superluminal travel, but personally I wouldn’t bet on it. You can’t cheat nature; there will always be a price to pay, magic simply doesn’t exist.
I believe humans one day travel out of this universe not just solar system.
idk what technology is supposed to project us through time and space, there are huge distances and space debris, i’d like to believe that we could venture out and explore new and amazing worlds but i think its pretty much impossible,
if you work out the distances involved and how many light years here and there it puts it into perspective a little.
