So I grew up jamming around campfires and garage parties, and without fail someone would always request a country song. The trouble being, the sound of country music, The twangy Voice and the standard gcd instrumentation made me feel actually physically ill as a musician.
So… one day a few years ago I decided to make myself listen to country whenever I was in the car, for an entire month. And what I found is that it grew on me. I had always liked a few tunes by guys like Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, but as a gener I had little respect. But I found it grew on me, and what I realized is that the simple chord structures were just a stage upon which the lyrics were set. As I listened, the different songs became began to take on their own personality, and I could actually see what people saw in it
It’s not something I could have appreciated when I was younger
A lot of my family is from Texas so I grew up around a lot of country music.
I hated it when I was a kid. I wanted to listen to Iron Maiden and Megadeth LOL.
But I like some of it nowadays. I love the 60s and 70s country. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell.
I also like a lot of artists who are probably more folk or Americana but their songwriting style sounds very country. Like John Prine and Mandolin Orange.
It grew on me too i use to despise country then one day i was sick in the crisis center withdrawing from lexapro and haldol cold turkey but listening to country music and going on walks brought me back to life
How very true. I’ll probably get shot here in the forum, but I’ve never been a big fan of rap. However, I can think of several exceptions to that rule, especially in early rap. Also, there’s a song on YouTube that I thought was brilliant. There’s some good artists here on the Forum, so I’ve been trying to open my mind to it more
