I’ve been on clozaril (clozapine) for a year and a half now. I’ve gained a lot of weight and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about loosing that weight. I walk 4 miles a day and do 30 minutes of aerobics but I’m not really showing any progress.
Is anyone else on Clozaril or Zyprexa (was on that before clozaril) had weight gain problems?
Yeah I put on a lot of weight on clozapine. Had to come off it for other reasons. Is hard cos often clozapine works where other APs have failed. So sometimes coming off this particular med isn’t an option.
Your doing all the right stuff with walking and exercise. Does clozapine make you crave carbohydrates? Maybe going on a low carb diet may help.
My brother was on Clozaril for a while and he’s on Zyprexa now, but he hasn’t had any weight gain problems.
I am on zyprexa and I put 25 kilos… I was eating a lot of sugar at the time. but I am not still stabilized so I don’t practice. I was hating sport at school, it left it marks :/…
You can get on Strattera to lose weight. Or topamax.
I gained a massive amount of weight on clozapine but I work out alot so it ended up being muscle mass instead of fat, I was up to 240 pounds at one point with 19% BMI (very low).
It sounds like you are getting plenty of exercise. You may need to watch those carbs and sugars that you are eating. An app like myfitnesspal can help count calories.
I gained alot of weight when I was on clozapine combined with prozac(fluoxetine).
But when i stopped prozac, I started to lose weight.
I’m on clozapine and I have problems with the weight gain as well. I try to eat healthier and I lose a few pounds, but it seems that the weight keeps coming back.
I was underweight before going on ZYPREXA 10.5st I then ballooned to 15.75st I’m not 12-13 and still take it.
Managing to loose it was hard to start with. I just used to eat breakfast cereal 2x per day and a large lunch inc carbs and fruit.
These days I eat healthily 3x per day and do a bit of walking maybe 1mile 3x per week.
I haven’t ever taken clozaril, although I am on abilify. I gained most of the weight while I was risperdal, like 30 pounds within a couple of months. Then on abilify i gained like 10 pounds over a couple of years. I started taking wellbutrin recently and i have been able to lose 10 pounds in just a couple of months. maybe wellbutrin will help? I know it can either cause weight gain or weight loss.
Thanks everyone! Clozaril has been a miracle for me. I was on many different meds before it but this seems to work best for me. Even though the weight gain is awful, I still find that its very effective.
