Choking on water?

Anyone started choking on things because of APs?
This started happening since upping my risperdal to 6mg from 4mg. Water gets into my lungs and I choke. I hate that side effect.

Yeah I frequently choke while drinking water.
I’ll start coughing like crazy!

Exactly, me too.

I have a feeling it’s because of the Risperdal also.

I read it can cause swallowing difficulties.

Yeah it can.
It’s not just Risperdal, lots of APs can have this effect.

The price in quality of life we pay to be sane is insane.

I’m destroying my body on these meds just so I remain sane!

You got that right! Can’t even detox your body.

Is this happening while you’re lying down? Your stomach contents escape into your lungs?

Yes, but only clozapine. I got increased salivation from aripiprazole (Abilify) and possibly sulpiride, but no trouble swallowing. With clozapine it’s the other way round.

No, while I am standing.

The problem could be caused by obesity:

I know but it only started after going from 4 to 6mg Risperdal. Risperdal and other APs are know to cause swallowing difficulties. They affect swallowing muscles and reflexes.

When I was on Latuda, I choked on things all the time. Rice was the worst. I love rice, but it would ball up in my throat entrance and plug it.
Sometimes I could swallow it with a big gulp of water, sometimes I had to stand in a “throwing up” position and cough.

I can’t swallow on demand every now and then. I only experienced this on clozapine. Sometimes I choke on the saliva it causes after taking it. I don’t think I could sleep on my back.

I am on perphenezine, which causes a swallowing disorder. I am on a drug to counteract it so I don’t have trouble swallowing anymore.

Whats the name of the med?

This happened to me. It was really bad on perphenazine I think? One of the needs I used to take. Switched to Rexulti and it’s better, but still not gone.

I had an upper endoscopy to make sure everything else checked out and it seemed mostly fine.

It’s really frustrating, though, because my GI doctor Kris wanting to blame reflux because I’m fat even though I have zero reflux issues. :unamused:
