I used to give regular monthly donations to three charities but my income went down and now I can only afford to give a monthly gift to one of them. Now I give $15 a month to SmileTrain, a charity that goes around the world and gives free, life saving surgeries to repair cleft palates in children, especially in poor countries. The charity has a high rating on spending most of their donations for the surgeries and a small amount in administrative fees. The charity saves lives, children with cleft palates often die before age 5 and rarely live past 19 and are often shunned and ostracized in their villages and towns and the operation to repair it gives them a normal life.

I usually give to charity at least once a fortnight .

Not much but still something I’d something .

Thing is I know a “human rights activist dentist “ who I think is an identity thief for people n maybe in to trafficking n nasty stuff yet squeaky clean exterior seemingly ….

Lots of green washing and a seemingly “sweet” n caring was not authentic but stole light years with other lefties because they are in all sides of politics and the strange thing is it’s the ones that look “perfect roll models “ that are the fakest n do fake charity and fake nice while attacking etc

A woman made $200 000 pretending to have cancer and even snuck in to hospital and everyone cheats on their files and photos and some people had every photo of them almost be a “set up “ by those surrounding them ..

Some may be true beauts who give a :fu:t6:

Also lots even gets laundered n goes to weapons n so .

I do believe in human rights and animal rights n even those in jail usually get food n water n good health care n a bed .

I give to a few different organisations regularly.

Because I do care .

Some true beauts may do authentic care .
Everyone isn’t horrible nndake n power crazed n stealing etc maybe just a large majority :joy:

I shop a lot at a neighborhood thrift store that’s owned by Catholic Charities. I collect things like clothes, hats, and sneakers so whenever I buy any of those at the thrift shop all of the money goes right back into programs and food banks for the poor, elderly, immigrants, and any other underrepresented group in our country.

It feels good to know that my money goes towards a good cause.

I pay a small amount to my old university hardship fund

They helped me a lot with my studies so I try to give back even if just a token

Also buy charity shop stuff

Lotto also donates money from the tickets I buy

The biggest thing is when I die I want some of my money to landscape the gardens on two of the wards at the mental hospital

I discovered something depressing about charities after answering this thread. I was inspired by this thread to try and find another charity to give $15 a month to but I looked at some of the top charities who get top ratings by watchdog groups and saw the many top charities like St Judes Children Hospital and Goodwill and Feeding America.

I did a search for all the cons of these charities and got some depressing results. There’s too many specifics to list here but every charity I looked at had things wrong with them. Examples: Feeding America fosters dependence on food banks critics say. St. Judes has billions in reserve dollars but they don’t really pay for all the families expenses which is their biggest claim. Goodwill pays less then minimum wage to some of its disabled workers, sometimes as little as 22 cents an hour. And lots of the CEO’s at these charities are making high six figure salaries while the people they’re supposed to be helping are struggling and barely making a living.

I looked at the cons of 6 or 7 top ranked charities and I’m very disillusioned with charities in general now. A concern is that my money would not be going to the people or animals that need it most or the charities could actually be hurting people, directly or indirectly.

IDK, I’ve been examining charities for an hour now, I’m tired and will resume searching for a charity to give to tomorrow, the bottom line seems to be giving to a charity that is the lesser evil out of the bunch. Maybe evil is too strong a word but some of these charities have some alarming problems with them.

I donate to a pug rescue group every month. Sometimes if something I feel is worthwhile donating to on Facebook comes up I will donate to that too. I recently gave money to a family in need who are local to me. Their daughter has leukaemia and they can’t drive and she is having to go far for treatment so they were raising money for driving lessons and a car.

I sometimes feel people take the piss though. I mean we have some local refugees here. I have given clothing to them before. But a while back they were asking for money for the men to go and play golf regularly. I didn’t appreciate this. It costs hundreds of pounds a year to play golf. A luxury even working citizens of this country can’t afford. So I have not given them anything else since.

I forgot I also play the veterans lottery. I know I will never win it but they do a lot of good for our veterans.

I’ve given to the veterans lottery before, i thought it was a recurring payment though so idk why its not coming off anymore,

I give to various causes-

I give to people in humanitarian crisis with no food/water or anything,
I also give to my church who gives it to different charities each month
I support the cancer research & also just started supporting Ukraine again.

I’m hoping they can cure cancer at some point.

On the opposite side i was accosted by a charity who were asking for £1 for cat protection but i really didn’t want to sign up, sometimes the vendors try and shame you into signing up, i didn’t like it.

Also we have professional beggars here who do not need to beg, apparently they work for a gang & its very dodgy, i gave one food once but that’s it, sometimes i see an older guy who looks genuine & i flip him a bob or two but the street beggars scare me mostly.

I have made a few donations but never any subscription based things. And I really hate it when people employed by charities approach me to ask me to sign up to make regular payments. It makes me quite angry TBH.

I am not very trusting of charity organisations in general and as someone on low income I don’t feel like its my responsibility to give my own money on a regular basis.

Not sure if this counts, but I donate to local public television each month.

It’s only a small amount, but I donate to them because their shows were about one of the only things I could handle without getting hardcore symptoms during the earlier days of being sick.

Cooking shows, painting shows… Heck, I even watched Sesame Street a few times to be honest .

…Really saved my bacon, to put it lightly. :bacon:

I also donate gently used clothes and shoes and random household items to the Salvation Army.

(I used to donate to Savers, but I believe they’re a “for profit” thrift store, so I don’t really give much to them anymore— Salvation Army I think uses their profits to fund rehabilitation programs for peeps, so that’s a good thing in my book.)

We support local school breakfast and lunch programs. Also local literacy.

It’s completely fine to say no, if you don’t give anything to charity then that’s your choice, no shame in it.

This made me consider donating to my local animal shelter instead of some big charity. Maybe find local.
