Cats causing schizophrenia in the news lately...remarks?

It’s always baffled me that I am the only one in my family that got schizophrenia and this “cat poop parasite” that supposedly causes schizophrenia has got me thinking…at first I remembered never being around cats growing up. All my family always has had dogs mainly. But then I remembered playing in a sandbox that had cat poop in it a lot as a child…hmmm. remarks?

Do any other members on your family have any other diagnosed mental illness? Or do you suspect one or two might have one? cousins uncles aunts etc?

my mom said there was one great aunt that supposedly had mental problems but not schizophrenia…I don’t know really. I don’t think so.

Most families are in denial unless it’s pretty full blown. i.e, A little eccentric.

The more therapy I’ve done the more I’ve picked up on it in my family and with family friends. Some even have been diagnosed at a later date… ie a friend of the family was dx with BP at 60. I did wonder once if he had it when I first started some pretty intense therapy.

No idea why all the bad rap with cats lately. Almost as bad as blaming everything on the guy with the red suit the horns and carries a pitch folk. To me it’s all just passing the buck.

One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives.

I have always said that you can tell how nutty a woman is by adding her age minus # of other occupants in the house x # of cats squared.

I hate the cat poop theory… I’m always surprised when it comes back.

There are more cat owners then people with Sz… if the cat poop thing was viable every cat owner would have some form of mental illness.

the way it played for me… I still believe it’s genetic.

I had a Grandfather who was “eccentric” no one SAID mental illness because back in the 40’s that sort of thing was never talked about.

But my Dad has been looking at what he remembered of Grandpa and what my Uncle with Sz and I have been through and my Dad firmly believes my Grandpa had SZ.

Was just a thought. If it turns out to be t true. Surely we all can have a civil suit against cat food companies and rake it in. :heavy_dollar_sign:

Hmmm whiskers…Something smells fishy!

Blaming stuff on cats sucks.

I use to do it if I spilled kool aid on the carpet or something like that and in retrospect I feel really bad about that.

Have you ever seen those people that hate cats so much that they abuse them and sometimes kill them? I have and most i’ve seen that are like that are very insecure so they blame the insecurity on the cat because cats are nothing if not secure in themselves.

I agree, we’ve always had cats in my home, except for a brief period when we rented a house that the owner didn’t want pets in. I’m not the only one in my immediate family that handled kitty poop but I’m the one with the official diagnosis of Schizo-Affective. I don’t think it’s related to kitty poop, in my family there have been histories of odd behaviors but back in the day, especially out in the farm lands where my family lived mostly, they didn’t really diagnose mental illness like they do today. My biggest downfall aside from having history with mental illness is being born 2 months premature. I think that played a huge role in my diagnosis. I don’t think it had anything to do with cats, or kitty poop…
