Can you lose weight while on AP?

Go with what works for you, you can always keep trying different meds until you find one that works with minimal or no side effects. It took me about 15 years to finally find Lurasidone but I am doing better than ever now.

I have never heard of lurasidone. I wish I could just quit meds completely. But since I’m still some what paranoid and just had a visual hallucination 3 days ago I guess my psychiatrist wouldn’t agree to that

It’s also called Latuda. It is an atypical antipsychotic. It’s a relatively newer one. Couldn’t hurt to ask your pdoc about it. I’m on 60mg but some people go up to 120mg or even a little higher.

I had auditory, visual and tactile hallucinations plus a persistent delusion and it is all gone now. I’ve been completely stable since going on it about 3 years ago. it’s because of this medication I am able to work now. My blood work is great and I’ve lost a ton of weight, it’s been a godsend.

I lost 51 lbs over one year’s time taking 500 mgs of Seroquel (250 lbs to 199 lbs). I think diet is 80% of weight loss, and exercise is 20%. I ate lots of fish and vegetables, and I also joined a dance class.

I’m back to 235 lbs because I fell into a deep depression (death of friends and family and other things), so I lost interest in weight loss.

That sounds amazing. I’m happy for you. I could ask my psychiatrist next week if I could try it. I think he wants me to use risperdal.
Don’t you have Any side effects?

Yes and no. I don’t have any direct side effects from it, like none at all.

However if I take 60mg all at once I experience akathisia. Lurasidone has to be taken with food, so what I do is split my pill in half. I take 30mg with breakfast, and 30mg with dinner. My pdoc was fine with this. By doing this I avoid the akathisia and have no other side effects.

My body can easily handle 2 doses of 30mg, but it can’t handle 1 dose of 60mg

I gained a ton of weight in a short time on Seroquel. Try Invega or Haldol, maybe? Those two didn’t seem to make me gain

Ask your doctor about metformin it can’t help you lose weight while on zyprexa

I stopped that as it was giving me stomach pain. On the med package it says irritates the stomach.

Rexulti, Ziprasidone and Lurasidone are supposed to cause less weight gain.

I was on Zyprexa for 17 years (40mg), after a few years the weight gain from it caused me to develop diabetes. My doctor put me on metformin, I have been on it for about 12 years and am still taking it, it didn’t help me lose any weight at all. Many years later he also put me on Forxiga, another diabetes drug that is known to cause weight loss, it helped a little but not much, but by that time I was reducing my Zyprexa so I don’t know if the weight loss was the Forxiga or the reduction of Zyprexa, probably a little of both.

So what’s your bmi now?

So you get less side effects by splitting the lurasidone in half? Do you experience akathisa but just not as extreme and only more consistent?

I don’t have any side effects from Lurasidone(Latuda). By splitting the tablet in half and taking half with breakfast and half with dinner I don’t experience any akathisa, none at all.

Have you tried the extended release version? The instant release gave me stomach pain as well. Now I take 750mg ER.

Idk which one I was taking but it was 500mg/pill. I told the Dr and he just stopped it.

You should talk to your dr about trying the extended release the 500mg ones gave me stomach pain but the extended release 750 didn’t

Honestly my weight didn’t increase since I stopped metformin so it was doing nothing.

My BMI is 23.6 @swordiebrom
