I switched from Risperdal to Zyprexa several months ago. I saw my nurse practitioner today and my weight went from 277 to 293 lbs. He’s not happy with the weight gain. He wants me to ask my psychiatrist about a different AP.
I have arthritis in my left leg and lower back, and being overweight makes it worse. Have any of you lost weight on Zyprexa? Any suggestions. I mainly chose Zyprexa because it’s cheaper. I really don’t want to stop taking it.
Since I quit zyprexa, I lose weight effortlessly
I lost about 20 kg on this medication in 1.5 years just by cutting carbs 5 days of the week, and sugar all together. I eat vegetables instead. It is not very fast, but I found the way I went about it to be sustainable for me which is also important. It took some time to think of recipes that I find satisfying enough to regularly eat. After a while you will start to appreciate the taste of vegetables much more. I gave myself a break every weekend and while not indulging in sweets or crisps, I would treat myself with roast potatoes or pasta’s in the weekend. I also didn’t cut alcohol in the weekends. Clearly, if you would stick to the routine throughout the entire week, things would go faster. I also recommend counting calories. In the end it is a simple subtraction of what you burn off from what you take in. Knowing your way around the amounts of calories of the foods you regularly take, relative to the portion sizes, is also helpful. I found this to be a good way to stay on track. For me it is doable to have a negative balance of about 500-700 calories a day, which amounts to almost losing 100gr of weight. Roughly knowing this balance throughout each day is reinforcing for me.
Quit zyprexa March 2019, by oct 2019 I lost 115 pounds, no changes in diet and I was bedridden so no exercise. I went from a 3x top to a large. Pants xl to a m/l depending on the fit for my hip.
Zyprexa did nothing for my symptoms but they wanted me on something. So I cold turkey off it, tried vraylar in july and august, had a bad physical allergic reaction and that pdoc just told me to take 16 benadryl a day and upped the dose. I ended up in ER because of her and the ER did a hip I ejection wrong and activated the RSD into my right hip, so I’m on a cane. I just started driving again in January, but do as little as possible because everything hurts.
I’ve been off APs since March other than the botched vraylar catastrophe. We’re gonna work on the lumateperone at end of month, otherwise I’ll still be AP free. Pdoc I have now has me on xanax 1mg 2x a day, with.options to increase if needed.
I’ve lost on zyprexa. I gained a lot on risperdal. Gained over time on zyprexa but have lost a lot. Trying to lose more and getting there but it’s always a slow process and you need to do all the right things like watch your diet and exercise.
I’ve done nothing but gain while on zyprexa except for when I took it with an antidepressant celexa, I’m on antidepressant now to Zoloft but haven’t seen a change in weight. Those numbers seem high to me unless your really tall. I’m 225-230ish and 5 11 and doc says I’m overweight. Maybe switching to a different ap isn’t the right thing to do. Is the ap working otherwise? Also some ap can cause diabetes especially zyprexa. Maybe a different change is in order.
I’m 6’0" tall and came down with diabetes in 2011 when I was talking Zyprexa. Zyprexa works well with me and completely removed the schizophrenia symptoms. I’ll speak to my pdoc Monday about it, but I want to try the low carb diet first. I have arthritis in my left knee, hip, and lower back that the excessive weight is impacting. The low carb diet should also help my blood sugar too.
Gaiined 20 kgs when I was put on Olanzapine. Have lost the weight over 7 years on Paliperidone.
Yes but ultimately there is some excess fat still…It can probably be removed in Sweden, where I live…
