the first couple time I was on stage in front of a big crowd I almost panicked…it went well but you could notice I didn’t move well. haha…then I started playing guitar and singing by myself on stage between bands for a couple of years and I got addicted to the adrenaline…good luck.

I’m a musician too. I’ve always been. I’m 41 years now and still on it. My website address is when you click on my profile name. Cheers!

Hi there. Can anyone point to any scholarly articles on purported links between musicianship and schizophrenia? I’ve seen it suggested that musicians are more likely to be at risk of developing it; but I’ve also read that the condition might hinder musicianship… which would thus seem to suggest the opposite is true. I’m very grateful for any guidance anyone can provide.

@Scribble So I try making music myself, but ever since my schizophrenia has worsened, I find it harder to make music. I actually read an article (I can link it later) where schizophrenics have difficulty distinguishing different pitches that are close to each other. Not exactly tone deafness, but sort of something like that. It’s most noticeable in social situations, as in not being able to understand the tone of voice someone is using. It’s a pretty sad cognitive deficit to have.

I think musicians really have to believe in ourselves and sz can shake that belief.

Thank you very much for the insight, and I’m sorry for your difficulty. May I ask, do you take meds to address your condition? Do you find that they help your musicianship at all?

I have only played live a few dozen times, but I have never lost the nervous feeling. It’s funny, once I start to play that all goes away, it’s the build-up beforehand that kills me

Idk, I was on Nardil for a while, which increases dopamine, and I was able to make music pretty fluidly. On abilify, idk if it really helps with my musicianship. It’s clearly partly a dopamine issue. I think it’s because of the lack of dopamine in certain parts of the brain, but unfortunately, abilify barely does anything for negative symptoms. Even though abilify is a partial agonist of the dopamine receptor.

But I think it also has to do with nmda receptors. I take NAC and sarcosine for that, and they sort of help. But only so much.

@Scribble Sorry, to answer you question more clearly, I don’t think the meds that are meant for schizophrenia help with my musicianship. I wish they did. They need to make meds that target that area of the brain.

Music making is a big part of my life although I wish there were easier ways to make money with it. I am probably slightly below average in my musical abilities compared to other musicians but I prefer making music to watching TV. Writing and recording songs is a great cognitive exercise and I also published some simple music instrument apps. A lot of suburban folks only seem to be impressed with your accomplishments if they make a lot of money though.

It took me a lot of mental effort to figure out how to write computer code that would translate a chord name like “Bb7” into individual notes and frequencies.

it has been really good therapy for me and a great way for me to network.

I was always into music but distanced myself from it for stupid reasons until I was done with college. Now I say it’s kind of my thing because it comes very easily to me compared to other creative media like drawing or writing and I’ve been offered to help out on projects that need music and I’m thinking to make some money out of that in the future when I’m more stable. I really got into learning and practicing guitar in the past two years and I can comfortably come up with stuff on the spot a lot of the time like during jam sessions. Unfortunately I’m too anxious to do those anymore even though others seemed to enjoy my playing a lot.

Super high anxiety has always gotten in the way of my performing for people as well. And I’ve been playing for 16 years now, consistently.

I would have liked to learn piano from a young age.

Instead, I play no instruments
