Does anyone on here have experience with buying/owning guns with schizophrenia. I want to own guns later, but I’m not sure if schizophrenics are able to buy/own guns.
I own two guns and had no problem purchasing them.
Although, I will say, I don’t want them.
Owning a gun has only made me more anxious and I don’t feel like I’ll ever need it.
There’s really no point to owning a gun.
People just do it because they can.
I own a couple guns, but they were purchased before I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. They are locked away in a gunsafe – which I don’t have access to. And that’s fine with me.
I own guns. A rifle and a shotgun. Bought them secondhand. I’ve purchased a new gun from Walmart in the past.
I’m just going to have it as home defense, possibly concealed carry when I’m older. I’m just doing it now because I’m more stable.
You have to just abide by your state laws. i live in the most restrictive state, NY, and even here mentally ill can buy and own guns. Just be aware that it is dangerous to yourself if you ever are suicidal.
I don’t think guns or people are the problem. Doesn’t matter what you own. It matters who you take orders from. If you are part of well regulated militia, by the people, for the people. Then the right of said militias and people involved which own guns, have the correction toward that right. But if you think, any intoxicated fool Wheeling Round a dead body has any right to create such rot, you do not know either the letter or the spirit of Law of Love, nor the conspiracy of Hope That Made The Big Bang.
I was allowed to fire a .22 rifle in summer camp. It was fun, sorta. I never felt compelled to make the purchase. So, I figured, if bought a gun and shot myself, then I would be denying myself in the past the right to buy a gun, in a very paradoxical way. Additionally, if I gunned down any other life form, wouldn’t I be poaching on a higher authority’s territory.
I am satisfied with wielding the pen and not the sword. It’s so much more rigorous for me. I like to work and be a Working Person In The Real Work.
In my state, the law is that you can’t own a gun if you’ve had an mental health arrest in the past five years. I cannot own a gun, and Mr. Star has to buy a fingerprint safe and prove I wouldn’t be able to access it if he wants his guns at the house. Right now, his dad has them. Next year, it won’t matter, but I still don’t think we will keep them here because we have an impulsive and depressed child in the home.
Yeah life has a way of distracting even the most criminal of minds towards poopy diapers and pissy drawers. I think if dad was not so obsessed with curing the blues or red eyed vengeful spirits, he might put child care at a higher priority.
I can’t own a gun because I’ve been involuntarily committed to a mental health hospital.
Yes I can’t own a gun either because I was involuntarily committed twice in 2016.
This all seems weird to me in England talking about having guns! Pretty much only farmers, landowners and some illegal ones in gangs exist.
I was in army cadets, so I know how to shoot a rifle
I still shoot air rifles, they are a lot of fun. You can get some pretty impressive ones in the UK since we don’t have access to live rounds.
I can’t be around guns for 5 years because of being committed. I don’t care for guns anyway so I don’t care. Honestly it isn’t safe for me to be around guns because of my suicidality. I might use on to take my own life in a desperate moment.
I think in America there is something like 4x more murders, it is a pretty bad idea.
I used to be very pro-gun, but I’m coming around on that. It’s such a slippery slope, but with these mass shootings that seem to occur weekly, I think there should be some sort of ban. I know legislators have already began stricter background checks (which should have been implemented in the first place). Which is why I’m totally not sure if I can buy a gun as a schizophrenic (not that I want one)
My dad is a gun collector and has a full safe in the house. I don’t have access as we have agreed that I shouldn’t have access after my diagnosis. I did however win a shooting competition while my family didn’t know I was very psychotic lol. I’m a good shot. I’ve let go that part of my life, but you should look into your local laws and maybe take some classes on gun safety and storage. I know for my mom to get her concealed carry permit my mom had to get recommendations from peers, which might be hard if you have a history of psychosis.
I don’t trust myself with a gun.
I’m afraid of guns anyway
Concealed carry permits are generally not possible if you have sz/sza. I don’t know about the rest.
I don’t own anything more harmful than a butter knife and don’t ever see that changing.
In all seriousness, the next time the democrats are in control of congress and white house, you can be assured that gun laws are going to change drastically and there will be a lot of restrictions put on people with psych disorders. Some states don’t allow handguns if you have a ‘mood disorder’ .
Example:
(d) For purposes of Subsection (a)(7), a person is incapable of exercising sound
judgment with respect to the proper use and storage of a handgun if the person:
(1) has been diagnosed by a licensed physician as suffering from a psychiatric
disorder or condition that causes or is likely to cause substantial impairment in
judgment, mood, perception, impulse control, or intellectual ability;
(2) suffers from a psychiatric disorder or condition described by Subdivision
(1) that:
(A) is in remission but is reasonably likely to redevelop at a future time; or
(B) requires continuous medical treatment to avoid redevelopment;
(3) has been diagnosed by a licensed physician, determined by a review
board or similar authority, or declared by a court to be incompetent to manage
the person’s own affairs; or
(4) has entered in a criminal proceeding a plea of not guilty by reason of
insanity.
(e) The following constitutes evidence that a person has a psychiatric disorder or
condition described by Subsection (d)(1):
(1) involuntary psychiatric hospitalization;
(2) psychiatric hospitalization;
(3) inpatient or residential substance abuse treatment in the preceding five-
year period;
(4) diagnosis in the preceding five-year period by a licensed physician that the
person is dependent on alcohol, a controlled substance, or a similar substance;
