I know. I worry over the mentally ill ability to exercise their rights declared in the second amendment. That’s why I’m very, very against red flag laws or other unconstitutional laws.
I sold guns at Walmart and passed the background check but I won’t buy one. If I had owned a gun when I first got sick my suicide attempt would have resulted in death and I wouldn’t be here.
Don’t recommend one. Additionally I think my wife would shoot me if we had a gun. I ain’t buying one.
In my state, if a person has a documented history of suicide ideations or attempts, they are legally not able to purchase or own firearms. I think that is a great and unfortunate law at the same time. I have a mental illness history. And because of that, in my state, I cannot purchase a firearm for my own self protection. Even though I am no longer suicidal.
Not that you would necessarily want to but their may be some why to gets your rights restored but you could have to appear in front of a judge and they would have to agree to it. At least they will do that in some places.
Yeah thanks @anon12381882 but I wouldn’t want to go through the hassle.
I don’t need to purchase a gun.
I won’t post any depressing statistics on gun deaths in the United States each year. But suffice it to say that it’s probably twice that much.
Canada has tons of guns too but they don’t have the soaring gun death statistics that we do (the USA).
In VA every time I had a hearing at a mental hospital they said if I was found mentally unwell and committed that I’d lose my right to purchase a gun in that state. So I can’t buy them in VA, but I can in California as far as I’m aware.
I would never buy one, too much chance I’ll use it on myself.
I can legally buy one, never been considered involuntarily committed by police and never been seen for a suicide attempt. Plus I’ve talked about hubby’s job, so have a reason if we were to get one. And I can conceal carry in WI.
We haven’t had anymore incidents with our kids being threatened, so very unlikely to get one, but glad i have the option.
Red flag laws can most certainly be abused as can any other laws, but I have no issue with the cops paying someone a visit that is making threats against themselves or others and making sure they don’t have the means to follow through…People that post threats on social media or whatever and then claim their rights are being violated if the cops seize their arsenal get no sympathy from me.
In Texas if you have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution you can not buy a gun. If you have been voluntarily committed you can buy a gun.
Also if you’re sz you can not get a conceal carry license.
I own about 5 guns but my family hid them from me.
@John_Raven if you are compliant with your admission and don’t try to fight it in court, it usually does not count as involuntary. It is only involuntary if you’re brought in by force, or ordered to stay by court.
A violent threat is against the law, so that’s not what red flag law is. A red flag law is when a judge, cop, or any other coercive force within the government says you can’t own a gun based on how dangerous you CAN be. Now, I wouldn’t have as much of an issue with this if the government followed due process of the law. But they don’t. Instead the judge, in all of his wonderful omniscient power, declares you can’t exercise your natural right.
I think you have an unclear picture about gun control laws. I suggest doing research on snopes or Wikipedia.
Please tell me how its unclear?
Well first of all, they vary by state. Second, they must go through a full court case before a decision is reached, including proof of a reasonable threat of violence. That is due process. Third, they are only temporary measures, and cannot permanently revoke an individual’s right to bear arms.
No, I’m pretty sure there isn’t a jury trial, which is what I mean by due process. But either way, I’ll look more into it, I’m most certainly not an expert on this topic. Anyway, I have to go, I’m having a pretty rough day today, so I’m probably gonna take a nap.
As an Australia, i will never understand American’s need for guns. I don’t have any guns, and i’ve never been in a situation where i wish i had one. Don’t worry, i’m not going to criticise you guys that do have guns. I’m just interesting in the relationship.
That’s correct. Because it isn’t a criminal case. It is a warrant, which means sufficient evidence must exist to enact it.
Anyways have a good nap, and I hope your day gets better! Feel free to come on for support if you need. That’s what we are here for!
I started having problems with suicidal ideation a few years ago. Not sure what the trigger was, but my Wellbutrin mostly manages it. This makes me personally owning a gun a very bad idea. We got rid of ours because of it.
