No ObamaEra Ban On MI Gun Owners

It’s easier for those of us American sz’s and sza’s who want to own our own hand guns to own hand guns. For those who didn’t want it to, well, it just got easier for you, too. Congrats and sorry, at the same time.

I am actually on board with this, because as a schizophrenic, I find it hard to find full time work and as a bipolar person i have bad credit from manic shopping sprees, so I’m poor and live in a high crime urban area where a gun is kind of like owning a computer in the suburbs: a normal living expense. I don’t have one, since I was 5150’d for a long time and then 5250’d. I’m in charge of my symptoms and I need it for self-defense. It would not be left around carelessly or used unjustly (just in case you wonder how I’m going to be with my new gun) .
I checked with courts, for those of us who’ve been 5250d it’s a 5 year ban plus a note from a doc saying we’re okay and the dates of last hospitalization. I don’t know if that’s the thing in the trash, or if there was an even more strict ban on us getting guns, but whatever it was, it’s gone!
Here’s a quote:

The NRA is also trying to kill a Social Security Administration regulation issued last month that targets disability recipients who cannot effectively manage their benefits due to certain mental disorders, such as schizophrenia. The agency considers these people mentally unfit to own a gun, and under the new rule they will be reported to the FBI’s National Instate Criminal Background Check System.

is very excited about going gun shopping!

I know Oklahoma bans schizophrenics and MI people from owning guns. it says it right on the application for a gun. I used to work in my brother in law’s gun shop so that’s how I know…I would like to have a gun for protection too, especially when camping. oh well.

Well that is interesting. I live in a low crime area so even though I have bought a gun before I would probably never use it. Also because of the type of gun it was it was a bolt action .22. What kind of gun are you thinking about getting? Pistols are cool because you can carry them with you in your purse or something. However it is a lot harder to hit something with a pistol. I think most bad guys will leave you alone if you are armed though.

I don’t think necessarily mental illness should determine whether or not you can have a gun. The majority of mentally ill people are not violent and many people without mental illness are. I think you shouldn’t be allowed to have a gun if

-you have a history of suicidal thoughts or attempts
-you have a history of violence or thoughts/desires of violence towards others

I also think there should be much stricter rules on storing guns that should be enforced somehow. They need to be in a locked cabinet at all times and the safety should be on. Tons of children end up killing themselves or others on accident because the homes guns were not stored properly.

Personally I don’t think guns should be widely available and don’t find them necessary and I don’t approve of personal use of assault weapons at all. I think nonlethal weapons like stun guns, pepper spray, etc should be utilized instead. But I acknowledge that the world is complex and people have rights so I just settle for wanting basic safety regulations and background checks.

I am going to have to carry a gun. Here is why.

I am known as mentally ill and physically dangerous. Thugs love nothing more than just shooting someone who has proven himself to be hard to beat in a fight, not just fair fights, but a guy who knows street fighting. I very may well be a carcass to show around like a rich suburban boy with his slaughtered deer. Not over my dead body. Premise: I live in Memphis TN, the worst city for surviving (other than Detroit). I was planning to make a new life in South Chicago- that is how bad Memphis is. I went and was invited to join a counseling program in the south loop of Chicago a year ago.

I look like a tough mother ■■■■■■. Because I am. I wont be so tough if someone just shoots me while I am chilling out in public eating a burrito or something. I already carry a huge combat switchblade in the back of my pants in case anyone asks me for my wallet.

We can off ourselves with the click of a safety switch and the pull of a trigger, and we can be hunted easily.

Not me, I am gonna have to carry a real weapon and survive.

■■■■■■ kidding me, this is insane. I have made this clear; we now are OBLIGATED TO DEFEND OURSELVES, WE HAVE TO

That is what giving us guns tells us. It says we cannot rely on those who are sworn to serve and protect when it comes to violence.

I used to be violent. Old hat. So much for being a former sociopath turned counselor. Looks like I am gonna be running that prefrontal cortex hot cognition, running hot and making shitty choices.

Complete with a red and black tribal tattoo and being overweight with muscle mass. Yeah, I also carry a large switchblade, yep. Now I went to school and learned a lil bit about how people think, and I know better than to bring a knife to a gunfight.

And yeah gonna have to ask my mom for money for a gun, because reality of being a man is apparently getting your parents to fund your delusions.

May as well just prepare for the apocalypse, gotta gotta get my gun and stockpile downers so I can sleep.

I’m just playin, people. You know I love you.

Well, I don’t know too much about guns, which is weird since my ex was a former marine who had me study little picture cards of various gun types and their respective abilities…I forgot lol

Looking at the internet’s city websites, noticing berettas, rugers (the compact little black ones), mostly pistols. I’d like to also buy a nice safe for it.

No offense to anyone else with schizophrenia but schizophrenics are not always known for their good judgement or decision making skills. We have problems with perceptions and paranoia and misinterpreting what’s going on around us and what’s going on in our heads. To me it seems like if you give someone with these problems a gun it just seems like a recipe for disaster. A disaster in the making for others AND himself.

Personally, I’ve been to the indoor shooting range to shoot at targets two or three times with my dads guns (and they supply them there too) and it was fun and interesting and I’d like to do it again. But when I’m home and living a life where one thought or delusion can put me in a tailspin for hours, days or months, I would honestly not trust myself with having easy access to a gun stored 5 feet away from me in the closet or under my bed.

And this comes from a non-violent guy who had had paranoid schizophrenia for 37 years and I have not laid a hand on anybody the whole time and I rarely feel suicidal.

I should actually say that I actually trust myself a 100% if I had a gun under my bed. But the problem is that I have 0% trust in schizophrenia.

As a Non American lefty I personally can’t understand the obsessive fixation with owning guns that many Americans have.

I am starting to take my risperdal and cogentin at 7, so I’m pretty lit (anxiety wise or at least super sensitive). I don’t want to own a gun. If I ever moved in to Dad’s he would keep them in his gun safe, which he already does. No woman, no cry, no guns…

I don’t think that anyone who struggles with suicidal thoughts should own a gun. It is just too risky.

My family has guns in the house. When I was psychotic and tried to kill myself I did a quick search for a gun. Didn’t find one so I went with draino. Which is still a better option then a knife and seppuku which was running through my mind. I don’t know maybe I chose the one with the highest chance of survival. Of course my sister told me that almost everyone that does what I did dies.

It’s silly to own a gun if you are at high risk for further psychosis
Schizophrenics should be banned from gun ownership

I’ve been gentle and veggie a lot of the time, into yoga and eastern medicine practices

I really thought I would never hurt a fly… then I had command delusions to self and other harm
Others with a kick or punch
Myself with a razor blade

This was after a worsening of severity after 15 years of having ‘milder’ schizophrenia

It’s not just violent idiots that get command delusions - where they have little to no choice to stop themselves

No one can know if they will get violent whatever their
History / morals / temperament
All in the air

Also no one knows if they will be compliant with commands
That appears to be fairly random and not much to do with personality either

I had 15 years of schizophrenia before spending a further 2 years acutely psychotic age 31 after diagnosis age 17

Well, I’m really glad you survived @SP2342

Two people I’ve known used a gun to take their own life. They probably would both still be alive if they hadn’t had ready access to a gun.

I would never own a gun.
I can become completely delusional and paranoid very quickly.
It’s just not a good idea.

I just use a baseball bat for home defense or a walking stick if I go outside ever.

Picture this scenario. A schizophrenic person takes his meds and is stable for a couple of years and he gets a gun for protection. .Maybe even 5 or 6 years or more. But then this person can’t put up with side-effects like fatigue or weight gain.

So he/she ques taking his meds. And after a month or two or after a couple of years he has a relapse. The voices come back and so do the paranoia and the delusions. He has this gun kept under his bed. And he thinks the neighbors are plotting against him or that people want to kill him. And so on…The person is in his twenties and independent and he has no parents alive so he stays inside his house most days. Do we really want this person to have a gun with a box of a 100 bullets on hand?

Is this scenario so far fetched? And there are quite a few scenarios that are basically the same as this.

Or something like this: the schizophrenic is being harassed by voices, neighbours and what have you. Hits the Streets carrying the gun for much needed protection. Acts a little weird. Correction: acts a little weird with a gun in his hand. How do others, also carrying guns, perceive of this?

I don’t like guns, but sometimes I get paranoid about people out to get me so I wish I had one to protect myself. I probably would never get one though.

Okay, I guess I;m the odd one out here, but I still think for those of us functional and stable we should be allowed to decide for ourselves. There could be a petition signed by close relatives/friends to strip the sz of gun rights in the event of denial of illness, but for reasons of self-preservation and the upholding of the 2nd amendment, I want a gun.

I just didn’t like being (trigger warning) raped or beaten up in society, and therefore, I deserve the right for immediate, effective, long range self defense.

As sz’s, we’re more likely to be the victims of violent crimes and less likely to be the perpetrators of it (some exceptions apply).

You guys can opt out for the gun freedom thing, but why make the rest of us pay for your actions (which by the way aren’t even actions, as I don’t think any of you have used a gun to harm another person, or yourselves, or you wouldn’t be here)?

I still stand with the 2nd amendment, meaning we can choose whether or not we want to be able to own a firearm, and we can always sign an opt-out sheet that requires a psych eval to sign.

I get where you’re all coming from, but we can’t make a blanket decision over unwilling persons who have no history of committing crimes (*gtogta go my friend is singing a song long story…)
