Antipsychotics and kidney disease

Hello everyone. I am wondering if anyone knows which antipsychotics are safe for people with severe kidney diseases? I tried taking quetiapine but within three months my kidney function decreased significantly. I think I need new antipsychotic medication, but I don’t know which one is good. My psychiatrist says they all affect kidneys. I am so worried about my health. Can anyone help me?

I dont know, but I have kidney issues too. Suppose the aps could have contributed.

Does your doctor say what the kidney issue cause is @BrianTex?

One thing that is supposed to help guys’ prostates is cranberry juice. You might try that to see if it will increase your kidney function. Also, drinking large amounts of green tea sends my kidneys into high gear. I drink a whole pot of green tea made with three tea bags with “Uncle Lee’s” brand on it every morning.

I have chronic kidney disease glomerulonephritis. I have had it for years. But kidney function didn’t go down so quickly as it did during last 3 months. That’s sounds like about the time I started taking quetiapine. I contacted psychiatrist. Waiting for reply. Probably I need to contact nephrologist too.

Thanks for advice. I will try it. I used to drink cranberry juice. It was also recommended to me by my nephrologist.

Metabolism through the liver can be avoided by some antipsychotics but it is harder to find a meds that doesn’t affect the kidney so much. You must involve some specialists to find an antipsychotics that is really gentle to the kidney.
