Antidepressant experiences

Hey everyone, which antidepressants have worked well for you without side effects like hormonal side effects or too much weight gain.

I think I need one to be more focused and also motivated.

Thank you for the any insight / help you can give me - it will be super appreciated! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Edit: I’ve tried trazodone, fluoxetine and mirtazapine

Ask for an Atypical Antidepressant. They work differently than SSRIS which are notorious for side effects.

A bit more information on the ones I tried; Trazodone made me aggressive for some reason. Fluoxetine gave me erection issues (sorry if tmi). And Mirtazapine made me sleepy!

of the three, fluoxetine was the best one

I’ve been on many SSRIs (celexa, Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro) none worked for me at all. I’ve been on one SNRI Effexor. Again didn’t touch my depression. My miracle has been Wellbutrin. I’ve been able to lose weight, it helps me wake up in the morning. I feel more motivated.

I wish I could have used Wellbutrin for depression, here in the UK Wellbutrin is only allowed for quitting smoking :frowning:

I was using it a few weeks ago because I had a slight cigarette relapse and it helped me get through an entire book of chapters on calculus - it’s such a good medication !!! :sob:

Oh that’s tough. I’m sorry you can’t get it! I also take Modafinil which has been another miracle drug for me. Helps me wake up in the morning and focus throughout a 10 hour work day. It’s a CNS stimulant like Adderal

Again, modafinil isn’t proscribed for psychiatric patients in the UK :sob:

I used to use it and work too. But I was taking it against doctors advice - they told me never to take it anymore or I’d be in trouble :sob:

Oh that’s tough! I don’t know how my psych provider gets away with prescribing me so many controlled meds I take 4 controlled meds, but at least I can function!

I was on anti depressants from 2012 til 2020.

I was on Cipralex, Cymbalta and Wellbutrin.

Only AD I liked was Wellbutrin, but I stopped taking it for unknown reasons.

I wasn’t myself on them, I kept feeling out of touch and out of reality.

I hear you, it’s tough getting around regulations. I’m glad it’s working for you though - and you’re doing really well with it too - that’s a huge achievement, school and work

Thank you @AppleKidd I hope you find the miracle medication you need

I hear you, that’s definitely a risk I have to be conscious of. Trazodone did have an out of touch with reality feeling for me too. I’m gonna start running as a weekend thing, but I feel like I’ll need an AD too to supplement things.

I’ve had success with Escitalopram in the past. I just re-started taking it yesterday.

Fluoxetine (Prozac) didnt do much for me. I gave it 10 weeks.

It turns out some psychiatrists do go through the extra paperwork and proscribe Wellbutrin in the UK but it’s rare. I’m going to ask if I can see my doc about it. I have a strong feeling my nurse will be useless about it - she seems to avoid me a lot and it’s only been one month since she’s been assigned to me. She seems to be a slacker. Prefers meeting in the clinic as opposed to coming to my place which is the arrenagment and has cancelled two appointments in the span of a month which is basically the most I ask to see a nurse - twice fortnightly.

Is anyone in the UK on Wellbutrin here?

I’m on citalipram. You take it at night unlike other antidepressants. I gives me good rest and it’s very good for calming me down.

I do drink a bit more on it though, but I don’t drink all the time, only once a week

It’s the best drug, my sister recommended it to me.

I was having stomach issues and almost died from stevia poisoning. My sister said I looked depressed from my stomach pains so she suggested citalipram to cheer me up.

What I didn’t k ow was that citalipram also raises serotonin in the gut, and it actually helped to fix my gut issues.

I’m allergic to the natural sweetener stevia, I must avoid it at all costs or I’m sick for 5 weeks.

So citalipram is great for me. It doesn’t mess with your head like some antidepressants.

I’ve been on Trintellix (vortioxetine) for years now, and I really like it. Although, I’m currently tapering down from 20 mg to 10 mg.

No real harsh side effects – took away my suicidal and depressive thoughts, to the point where I think I can get off it completely

It’s a great med, at least for me
