What are some good antidepressants, available in the US, that help with anxiety/possible OCD/depression?
My husband has been seeing his GP for how anxiety/depression and he said she sounded like he was out of options after trying only 3. I don’t know much about antidepressants to give him advice. He’s wanting her to prescribe one more and then he’s switching to a psychiatrist, but getting in takes a long time so he wants to try something while he’s waiting.
So what are his options? Anything that’s worked really well for you? He’s tried Effexor, Zoloft, and Prozac with no luck.
Lexapro is great for me, too. Prior to that, I was on on amitriptyline, which also did wonders. It’s a tricyclic (so may work if ssris and snris aren’t) with a steeper side effect profile, but I really didn’t experience anything terrible on it.
Lots of people love Wellbutrin, too, which also works differently.
Wellbutrin has been the best antidepressant for me with minimal side effects, but of course everyone is different.
One bad thing I will say about Wellbutrin is that taking a very high dose like I take makes it, um, a little too easy to achieve an orgasm. Not such a good thing for a guy.
I am up to 450 mg/day now, though, while the standard dose is just 150 mg. I used to take 300 mg with no noticeable side effects.
Edit: if I remember right, Lexapro was the one that made it impossible for me to have an orgasm. Damn sexual side effects.
Those are my personal number one and two worst ever ADs. Haha. Lexapro made me so incredibly jittery and restless I had to go to the ER and amitriptyline made me hallucinate like whoa.
I went through a lot of ssri’s to end up on effexor. It’s a little different as it works on the complex that wellbutrin does nor ephiledrine ( sp ). I would have liked to try wellbutrin but it was complex over here in Australia because of it’s registration as a give up smoking aid. Dumb pill politic!
