Alcohol and antipsychotics

Is it safe to drink two beers while on 5mg Olanzapine?

Haven’t drunk in 18 months… but thinking drinking a couple of beers might be enjoyable.

I was on 40mg of olanzapine for over 15 years. I was told not to drink while taking it.

I haven’t had a drop of alcohol since about 2003. Other than some non-alcoholic beer which has less than 0.5% alcohol.

I’m no longer on Olanzapine, I’m on Lurasidone now, but I still don’t drink.

I’m tempted, but may wait a while. Only two weeks into a reduction

Doctors in different countries will tell you different things. The only known interaction is increased drowsiness. It is a mild interaction, so drinking is probably safe. None of my doctors have warned me not to drink alcohol. I’ve been on Zyprexa, Abilify and Seroquel.

Yeah, before I was on antipsychotics I partied a lot. Binge drinker on weekends with friends in High School and University. I missed drinking early on but I haven’t had alcohol in so long I don’t even think about it anymore.

I quit smoking and marijuana too. I’m totally clean. Sometimes I reminisce abut getting totally inebriated, smoking, partying and having a good time but I think I am past that now.

I decided to play it safe and just quit everything.

Something I will say is that it is nearly impossible to get drunk on antipsychotics. Whenever I tried, ijust gotthe sick and sleepy feeling, without any of the fun part. I gave up drinking in 2017ish because there was just no point in drinking things that taste bad and give me a headache.

If you do decide to drink, we ask that you stay off the forum while you do so. Posting under the influence is against the rules.

That’s okay…. Only thinking of having two. But probably won’t tbh… I’ll give it longer

I drink occasionally, but there is a very big interaction between alcohol and olazapine for me. I think the more closely the two substances are metabolised by the body the more severe interaction. And by interaction I mean feeling really out of sorts the next day.

So the way I solve it is that I occasionally drink a couple of beers, but I drink them in the afternoon or early in the evening. That way there is a few hours between the alcohol and taking the drugs. The closer from you stop drinking till you take the drug the bigger the interaction in my experience.

I try to avoid drinking much because then I have to skip the drug entirely and can’t sleep for the night and get a really crappy next day.

Same for me, on meds alcohol makes me tired and sleepy, kinda depressed. I still occasionally drink but small amounts and never more than 13% alcohol.

I never post while drunk bcz I never get drunk with the occasional small amounts I drink.

Yeah, it’s not a good idea to do so. I used to be on a gaming forum where people got lit up in the weekend. There was a lot of toxic things being said. People arguing, foul language…I think that was the main reason I decided to quit.

The max Ill have is a small glass of wine or one beer.

My pdoc in the UK told me moderate alcohol drinking on the dose of abilify I was on is okay. That was either 10mg or 15mg I can’t remember

Having said that, I have made the personal choice not to drink ever again

Not telling you to drink but i drank 3 beers on 3mg risperidone, still got the sedative effects of them, alcohol affects me easily so it might just be me.

Alcohol works on GABA receptors in your brain like a benzo which is why it can have sedative properties and you can become dependent on in like a benzo too.

I drank a lot over the years on antipsychotics. I never had any issues.

I haven’t had a drink in like a week almost I’m trying to abstain from alcohol and am only drinking two cups of coffee as opposed to the usual like 5 or 6! I feel great! I don’t recommend drinking on antipsychotics!!
