A homeless guy walked up to me today

And said, “Please sir, I haven’t had a bite for a week.”
So I bit him.

Amusing, but a “bum” might be considered an offensive word these days. Hopefully no one here takes offense, as I know some of us have been in this situation.

Its not nice to be called one, its an older word meant to disparage a person’s ability or usefulness.

I already changed it.

Im not that sensitive but its a relic of a more cruel world. Homeless isnt much better but its not insulting,

Fcs!

Why don’t we just call him a house-challenged individual.

Unhoused is considered more pc. Homeless implies a person does not belong anywhere.

I had a panhandler ask me for change.

I said, “Sorry. I was just going to ask you the same thing.”

The woman went postal on me and called me every name in the book.

It wasn’t fun.

Changing the name makes no difference. I was never offended by being called homeless when I was homeless because I was homeless. What bothered me was the homeless part. If people are really concerned about homeless people, do more than change what you call them. Advocate to have real programs that help them transition off the streets put into place. That’s what will make them feel better.

Compassion is sort of shown despite the fact that people tend to be crap in all walks of life

I have no patience for the young panhandlers…I figure the old ones will never change.

Can you prove it makes no difference. Changing perceptions around issues can create solutions. Homelessness defines the issue more as people kicked out of homes that kind of thing. Unhoused is more like not enough houses.

I’m guessing you have no idea how many homeless people I have interacted with in three plus decades of attending AA. You generally don’t worry about PC crap when you’re eating out of garbage cans, smoking tossed away ciggy butts, and dropping a dook in a public place at 2 am cuz you got no private washroom you can use.

Unhoused people are not all like that. Im not that concerned with pc either, but I know when the teeth gnashing starts over homeless, people start saying they live in pig stys etc. and get kicked out. If you talk about unhoused youre talking about scarcity in the housing market. Lots of people are housed in relative stys.

What the heck do you think living rough is like? I’ve done it. It sucked.

Im not talking about that. Im talking about changing the words people use so that when important discussions happen they are saying the right things.

Yeah. Not bothering with that. I also still refer to myself as an Aspie and enjoy watching it set certain people on spin cycle.

Many homeless people want to remain so and have mental illnesses…it’s complicated.

Truth. They view any form of offered treatment as coercion or even an attack.

Hypothetically there is nothing wrong with being propertyless. The society forces you to exist at a certain standard
