How long have you been taking or took risperdal?

Not many people here take risperdal, but for those that taking risperdal, or you took it, what is the longest time.

I been taking for 8yrs. Now. This is the only med i have tried and still on it.

I took it for… 11 months? Ish? Before switching to Abilify. I hated it, hated the way it made me feel, the way I gained weight… I was numb and tired all the time. It certainly helped my symptoms, but the side effects were too bad to stay on it. Abilify is nice, I still have some symptoms but they’re mostly manageable and I have a lot more energy, more life. I wouldn’t go back on Risperdal unless I had to.

Hi buddy - I have been on Risperdal for about the same amount of time you have been on it 8 years or so - Im pretty sure.
It is not my first antipsychotic - but I do like how it keeps me stable enough.
I just saw my pdoc earlier today, she said that I can reduce the dose if things continue to go well in another month or so.
She likes to reduce the dose of antipsychotics slowly - so it will be about 2 months at 2 mg then she will reduce it down to 1.5 mg - I cannot FRIGGIN wait! - my physical health is on the line!

God, I hated risperdal…it had horrible sexual side effects and weight gain…I finally got on prolixin (fluphenazine) and it’s much better…

10 years. It works for me.

What was the reason that your pdoc decides to keep you on 2mg for two months, than to reduce it again?
To see if your doing well on 2mg? Or to wait untill your body adjust to lower dose?

Been on it for nearly 5.5 years.

I think to see how I am still doing on 2 mg - she does not like to lower doses of antipsychotics right away - she wants me to take it 6 weeks to 2 months at a time. It takes a couple of months or more for the brain to adjust itself - if one cuts back on these meds too quickly it can cause destabiization

I’ve been on it for about 2 years. The side effects aren’t bad for me. I haven’t gained a lot of weight, but I’ve been watching my diet lately and I exercise.

Something like since 1995 for me. Tried to change a few times but end up back on it.

3mg since 1996 works pretty well for me. Not employed right now but haven’t been in the hospital since 1994.

I was on Risperidone for over six months - it made me feel stiff in the neck area… anyway, fast forward three years to 2012 and I am now on Clozapine and feel so much better… Cloz cuts through all the bullish*t of symptoms…Personally I don’t care if I’m on it for the rest of my life.

Ugh…Risperdal. Just the name makes me gain 10 pounds. Never gained weight so fast before, even on Zyprexa. I took it for 3 months in 2009, and I blew up like a balloon. Never again. I was on 6 mg.

I was on Risperdal for two years (2005-2007) It helped me go into remission, it worked well for me. When I relapsed over five years later I was put back on it, but only took it for a few months before stopping it ( I didn’t think I needed it). A couple of months after that I went into hospital and was put on the meds I am on now - amisulpride.

I’ve taken it for a couple of years 2x

it’s a great med for me but not the best of all…

i gained and lost 28 lbs on it both times

but the one i’m on now - don’t seem to be able to lose the same weight back on

i’ve heard on risperidone you often gain weight on it but you can lose it again - was true for me
