Saw my pdoc today - anyone take risperidone?

She added .5 mg of risperidone (Risperdal) to my 20 mg of olanzapine (Zyprexa) and 20 mg of citalopram (Celexa).

She said if I’m not feeling better in 2 weeks to take 1mg of risperidone instead.

She said it’s up to me whether I want to always take it at night or in the morning, I just have to stick to one of the other.

I’m not sure if I want to take it with my other psych meds at night or break it up and take risperidone in the morning

If you’ve taken risperidone before, how was it for you? When did you take it? Did it help you? Did you have side effects?

risperdal ruined my life…sexual side effects did me in…I felt trapped, then I got on another med (abilify. that worked but I was semi delusional), now I’m on generic prolixin and feel great.

I took Risperidone at the end of 2017 and/or beginning of 2018. I remember I had one or two really vivid dreams. In one I was flying somewhere at night. In another one I was stuck on the ceiling and I woke up scared. I think I was on 2mg every night. I didn’t take it very long. I was stable on it.

I think most antipsychotics cause those my invega does.

I did not like risperdone.
My body became swollen and hurt and heavy and yuck feeling always.
I felt horrible.

Olanzapine was good for me though as I remember .

I took risperdone for a year, i just weaned off in july. I took 2mg two times a day. It helped my sz symptoms, but it came with lots of side effects. I gained weight, had a low sex drive, my prolactin levels went from 17 to 135 (normal is up to 25), and i had nipple discharge. The prolactin and discharge is why i stopped it. Such a low dose will probably have less side effects, but i would be careful.

@Pickpink , I’ll keep an eye out for that. I used to be on Haldol for a long time and Haldol does that too but it never happened to me so hopefully it’s the same with risperidone

Risperidone was awful for me im now on invega doing well

@Rainstorm I gained 15 pounds (6.8 kg) in one month on Invega. Had to stop it. But I’m glad it’s working for you

I gained 80 pounds on invega but stopped after that

I went from 4-6-8-11mg risperidone.

Risperidone 6mg was the best for me
I was running 5 days a week

Risperidone 8mg worked as welll, a treat but more sedation
I was going out every weekend

Now on 11mg and im just ok, not too sedated but just a bit lazy

You shouldn’t be worried…

I got really really depressed on risperidone. I’ve talked to a couple other people who had the same experience. Probably won’t happen to you but definitely something to keep an eye on.

Edit: I was on 2 mg.

2mg of risperidone made me have panic attacks that stopped when I got off of it.

@LilyoftheValley, I take similar meds as you:

Risperdal 4mg at night; Seroquel 100 mg at night; Geodon 160 mg at night; Geodon 80 mg in the morning; Celexa 20 mg in the morning.

I am doing really well on this combination of meds. Risperdal at night helps me sleep.

Oh wow. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll keep an eye on that. Thank you for the warning! I’ve had many episodes of severe depression in my life.

Geodon is like candy for me. I was on 240 mg/day at one point. It did nothing for me. Does it help you @SkinnyMe ?

Yes Geodon seems to help me along with the others.
