You won't believe this

I was surfing YouTube and stumbled on a video tag titled “Woman charged with making a 13 year old boy touch her breasts gets life sentence.” I watched and it was true. By some law, it is the only punishment for her offense, no other options. For some reason she was not offered a plea bargain.

A psychiatrist said she was a very low risk for re-offending. The woman’s lawyer argued that that a second degree murder charge only carries a sentence of 25 years and that the worst case of child abuse this lawyer had seen was when a adult woman forced a 5 year old to perform sex acts on her while her boyfriend taped it. That woman got 70 years in prison while all this woman did was have a 13 year old touch her breasts while she was drunk and she got life in prison.

It’s outrageous. The judge calmly listened to this lawyer but there was nothing he could do so he had no power to do anything else but give her life in prison. Unbelievable.

Technically that’s pedophilia. At least insofar as the law would interpret it. She coerced an underage boy to perform a sexual act. It wasn’t outright rape, but still highly inappropriate.

The sentencing was really over the top though, I agree with that.

Mandatory prison sentences take away a judge’s discretion.

It’s really frightening, taking away a judge’s discretion. You really shouldn’t do that when the mandatory sentence is life. Craziness.

That seems awfully OTT - I’m not saying what she did wasn’t wrong, but life? That’s terribly excessive. I saw a news article yesterday about a teenage girl in Iowa who stole a $100 pair of shoes, it was her first offence, she had never been in trouble before. She got 5 years. I feel sorry for her, one stupid mistake and she gets 5 years in prison. Crazy.

Maybe she was not going to stop.
