I do all the time. Not meat etc - but I eat out of date pasta and tinned foods. I ate powered mash potatoes that was 6 months out of date yesterday and it was okay. I always buy too much food and don’t get chance to eat it. I’m starting to eat it all now. Once I’ve eaten everything I’m only going to buy what I need for the week and do a weekly food plan on what I’m going to eat for the day.
I hate to admit it, but sometimes i eat food i get at the dump! It’s usually expired or a bit out of date…just the unopened dry goods like cereal or rice or pasta, never meat or opened items. I also get stuff from the food bank, it’s usually with them cuz no one else wanted it…
I don’t know if the food dating system is the same in the UK, but I would consider eating food close to the “best when eaten by” date, if slightly over. It would probably depend how far past the date the food is.
I used to do the same when I was younger @WhiteRaven. In the Village I used to live we had a little COOP which is a small chain convenience shop and I used to to raid their bins overnight evernight, I was always full back then. And my cupboards where always full.
Depends on the food. I tend to pay more attention to expiration dates on fresh foods like meat and dairy. It’s more obvious when those foods have expired.
I have paid absolutely no attention to expiration dates for 64 years and I’m still alive and healthy. So much for the importance of expiration dates. I don’t eat out of dumps however.
I am right now. Scooped six tubs of expensive yogurt for a buck each because they expired in a few days. They’re good for a few weeks after expiry (yogurt!) and I’ll finish them before they spoil. Saved $24.
I don’t eat expired food.
And especially not food from the dumpster ----- there’s massive amounts of cockroaches and bacteria and other bugs n pests in there…
