Would u do weight loss surgery?

I was recently recommended or offered the possibility of weight loss surgery. My mom said flat out no dont do it. She said that doing it is out of the question for me. My mom also struggles with her weight…I have only watched a handful of videos about it. I told my GP to go ahead with the application. I have sleep apnea, blood clots, etc. maybe it would help my health…but idk…

I mainly just want to feel better physically. Im not doing it so people treat me differently. In fact thats what worries me the most. I dont want people to treat me any different or suddenly be nice to me because I’m “prettier” to them…or worse be meaner to me… I dont know all the risks…but it would be amazing to wake up and suddenly feel thin again…I dont eat much as it is, but I would need to be more active and quit smoking cigarettes also for at least six months and for good…

does that sound like its worth the risk? Has anyone gone through weight loss surgery? It could really improve my life and health overall.

If I could get it, yes. Absolutely.

People die from the surgery.

Definitely don’t do it.

Your mother is correct in this case.

Yeah, I’ve heard there are some risks involved but if you are way overweight and don’t think you are going to be able to lose the weight naturally, it might be worth the risk for you.

People die from complications of being overweight.

well I know its harder for me to lose weight…but my dad said he walks for one hour a day and loses about 5 pounds a week… I watched a video on the weight loss surgery and this woman lost 150lbs which is basically 5 pounds a week. If I really went strict on diet too that would be a start.

When I lived in town and went to college I walked everywhere I was half the weight and size i am now. like a size 10 jeans etc. and i was a lot happier just being physical…its hard being motivated…stuck in the house too.

I would try to incorporate both/lifestyle change and weight loss before I did the surgery anyways…its not like a quick fix. They would want me actively trying to lose weight and I have to quit cigarettes…its possible I get in shape before I need surgery…

My mother had weight loss surgery.

It went well and she recovered just fine.

She lost probably 100 pounds, probably more at one point.

But she really put the work in and changed her diet.

Another woman who had the same surgery around the time she did didn’t lose a pound.

She continued to eat what she wanted and thought the surgery alone would make her lose.

I don’t know.

I’d say give yourself a good solid chance at a diet (one you’re going to have to go on anyway, after the surgery) and see how much you can lose with just that.

Then consider surgery.

I have a muscle condition which makes it a litte more difficult. The more I work out it seems the more I gain weight from muscle fat too…and then I am in so much pain from exercise…like cramps all through my legs…but that can’t be solved with weight loss surgery…either…

Thats great that your mom had success. Yeah I think I’ll just start acting as if I got the surgery already and maybe see if I can get a gym membership…and a personal trainer…I would like to lose more than 100 pounds…I mean actually be skinny…right now the only reason my weight affects my self esteem is how other people treat me about it…

I thought you were going to start walking on a treadmill? Wasn’t it you who made the deal with your dad that he would pay you a certain amount for the time on the treadmill? You can lose lots of weight that way. I lost a ton when I was younger with that method.

My parents and brothers want me to do it but I hate pain. I heard that its too painful and can’t eat solid food for a while.

Yeah I am going to start doing that…but i want to lose more than 5 pounds a week if I can even do that…I want to be more active than this…i love to exercise and feel relieved. If i could handle it I would do intense workout every day and get a gym membership, or maybe walk an hour every day and once a week at the gym…

@anon69073975 , I’m losing 2 pounds a month by calorie counting. I’ve lost 22 pounds so far. I’m deliberately losing at a slow rate and it’s working out great.

Do you have a smartphone? If you do, download a calorie counting app.

Give that a go first.

Yeah one person said that when you wake up you feel pressure and have trouble breathing…you can’t take certain medications anymore or anti-inflammatory medicine because it can cause stomach ulcers. There are a lot of risks but sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks. Also it can be done with machines now and is supposedly more advanced.

Ok I’ll do that. The suggestion was from my GP so it was sort of out of the blue. I have never tried calorie counting I know my brother did that for awhile…

If you lose weight slowly, calorie counting is something you can do for years.

If you try to lose a lot of weight quickly via calorie counting you’ll probably get fed up with it and stop.

I know a person who has used noom.com to lose weight. I don’t know a lot about it but it incorporates psychology and CBT to help you lose weight. I’ve heard good things about it. I don’t know if it will work if your weight loss is caused my medication though.

I’m not losing when my calorie restriction says I should be. It’s frustrating.

@anon69073975 , do you have an Android phone or an iPhone ?

I can post the correct link for the app I use myself, if you tell me.

Edit: Actually the one I use might be a bit advanced for a beginner.

Didn’t work for me and the app is wretched. Their coaches are also horrible. I’ve had better luck with the free version of MFP.

Edit: Noom is extremely expensive and I say this as someone who can afford it.
