I understand that weight loss meds are all the rage right now. But with how new they are on the market I am scared that we do not know the long term effects of these medications. To be specific Ozempic was only approved in 2017, that’s less than 10 years ago. Do we really know how it’s going to affect people long term? I refuse to try weight loss injections or medications unless it’s a med that’s been on the market for a long time.
Maybe that’s just me being paranoid, but I have a friend who started one of the GLP1 meds and used it for two years, when she tried to get off the med she rapidly gained about half the weight back. Then her doctor told her she would have to take it long term. It just seems like a huge risk to take, personally I know how HARD it is to lose weight, I have struggled with my weight ever since 2018 when I first got put on APs. But I am determined to lose this weight without GLP1s because I am so scared of the potential long term side effects they have. Am I the only one here who is trying to lose weight without GLP1s? And I totally mean this post to not offend anyone I know a lot of members who take these meds, not at all shaming you but just seeking some insight.
I want to edit to add that i know many of the weight loss meds were introduced a while ago but only to treat diabetes. Now it seems like tons of people without diabetes are using them
I agree with you on the potential negative effects of medication. There are many examples of meds, including weight loss drugs (look up Fen-Phen, 1997), that have resulted in many deaths.
Diet and exercise should always be the first choice for losing weight.
I am right there with you @Catman and of course as you would probably agree, losing weight by diet and exercise is HARD work. But I think people should give it a good hard try before resorting to medication
Before i got on Mounjaro, i tried diet and exercise. THEN i tried bariatric surgery…it didn’t work. Mounjaro may hurt me more in the long term but i like weighing 153 lbs WAY more than i liked weighing 300 lbs. For me the benefits were way better than the risks, and my diabetes that i got from being so overweight is under control now. I tried other things first, but only these new meds have actually worked for me.
It’s because they work and I have not experienced side-effects from them that come anywhere close to what psych meds and other meds have done to me.
Haldol left me incapacitated and unable to work.
Clozaril nearly killed me when it wiped out my immune system (agranulocytosis).
Zyprexa caused explosive weight gain and left me with diabetes. That’s the illness that killed my mother at age 43, by the way.
Coversyl left me with permanent tinnitus.
Warfarin nearly made me bleed out.
Saxenda? I accidentally took a double-dose one day and spent 24 hours making Linda Blair and her can of pea soup look like a poseur. That’s it.
I’m seriously getting tired of the bigotry and fearmongering over one of the most revolutionary and workable weight-loss treatments to ever become available. I have the support of all of my doctors for this. I didn’t have the support of a single one of my doctors for keto and they all find it amusing that it’s promoted for SZ.
@shutterbug I didn’t mean offense by my post, I feel like you may have interpreted my meaning behind what I said as attacking those who use weight loss medications. It’s great that it works for you, I’m happy for you. I would agree that side effects from psych meds can be severe, also with personal experience of the hell Haldol put me through and almost losing my job because of it. So I do get your point. I’m not attacking anyone by my question of asking if others on here were trying to lose weight without medications. I just see a lot of posts about weight loss meds on here and was genuinely curious if anyone was losing weight successfully with out the meds.
Another thing I wanted to mention is I am weary of ALL new medication. Especially after the nightmare Vraylar created for me. Missed nearly 3 weeks of work because of the mania Vraylar triggered. I’m sticking to the more well known older meds for now and that’s just my personal choice
I do understand where your coming from. Im also med hesitant/scared of taking meds i take minimal. Id love to weigh less but im not sure yet. Im glad you asked this.
Another thing that worries me is excess skin from that much weight loss? I know its incredibly likely.
At least my diabetes is managed well. Im not overly hungry and i can move around and exercise when i can. Im 17 stone though not great but im not taking weight loss aids im just weight stable rn
I’ve lost a bit of weight(down 102 pounds, regained 40 back but started losing again and I’m currently down 67 pounds) even at 194 pounds down from my high of 296 I didn’t really notice any lose skin. Maybe I would if I lost 150 pounds total
Years ago I lost a lot of weight just by eating significantly less. I ate hamburgers pizza eggrolls. Fattening things. But the trick was at a two or three bites and then I quit eating. Then I had a suspicion that my niece had gotten molested and once I thought that she’d been mOlested I gained all the weight back Because I was so upset over it.
I don’t know if it happened or not honestly. I developed some pictures from a throwaway camera. My niece Raven in some pictures that I didn’t realize that she taken she was posing provocatively. Like pulling her shirt up to show her belly just kind of provocative. And I thought that was a sign that she had been molested. Because kids act out right?
Yeah that’s tough. I was molested when I was 12 so I was older and knew a bit more about what was going on. I don’t recall acting out but again I was almost a teenager
