Why do some people develop schizophrenia at 18 whilst others are 30+

can someone enlighten me…why 18 why 25 why 35

I’ve never had a doctor explain this to me. I developed schizoaffective disorder at 21. My aunt developed schizophrenia at 37.

Most of the time people develop schizophrenia in their late teens or early 20s. I was diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder at 21. At thirty seven I was officially diagnosed with schizophrenia. But that was because I wanted nothing to do with psychiatry, and I live in a small town that has a sucky behavioral health association. It was the VA that found it, and when I found out I had to see a psychiatrist, I was pissed. But it turned out to be the best thing I ever did for myself. I can only speak for myself though.

I developed my illness full blown in my early 20s - females tend to develop SZ later on - late onset SZ is not uncommon for females

Very good question. I don’t think anyone knows.

Generally - females get schizophrenia much later than men - the average age of onset for women is much later than men. It is thought that this is because estrogen helps prevent schizophrenia - and as estrogen levels go down in women with age - then their schizophrenia risk goes up.

That is all I think they know about age of onset for schizophrenia.

Wish I knew… My mom had it in her 20’s and I was diagnosed in mid 40’s. But looking back, I had symptoms in college, but not full blown hallucinations till mid-life. There is a history of some of my previous generations being institutionalized so I wonder about genetics. But have read and seen examples of those with no genetic history. My mom’s form is different from mine.

I had mild symptoms in my 20 s, but what one might call a breakdown in my early 20s but was diagnosed as depressed. I was ok until about age 45 and had a severe bunch of hallucinations and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. I’m female btw.

I am female too. Forgot to mention that. Yes I thought I was just very depressed and had ADD. Even took a test that showed my brain didn’t react as fast like someone with ADD. But, like you, was diagnosed at 45 when major hallucinations and delusions showed up and lasted and was hospitalized many times. Hope you are coping well. I don’t know people on here well yet, just been active for a few weeks.

theory go’s you stop growing the body stops and some parts are to fast to stop and clappes on them selfs like to much blood for hights of less fuid in the brain. etc.

Hi bluebird. I’m ok if I don’t try to do tOo much. I spend a lot of quiet time in a darken room. Too much stimulation sets me off. It’s weird because I had voices off and on in my 20 s but never told anyone. It stopped for the most part during my 30s and early 40s. I don’t know what the outlook is but who knows.

For me… I completely broke at 17… if I would have not gotten involved with drugs… my onset might have been later in life… but considering my childhood… I wouldn’t bet on it.

I was diagnosed bipolar at a young age but started developing schizophrenic symptoms in my early 30s.

I had symptoms from age 15. But crashed when I was 30+.

Eighteen, three sixes. Thats why in my case.
