Why do Schizophrenics Delete their Social Media Accounts?

As the topic question states… Why do most of us schizophrenics delete our social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, LinkedIn etc…?

Must we schizophrenics really need to isolate ourselves from normal society?

Is the social communication network of schizophrenics really just this forum and the few people in our lives?

I dont think its isolated to just one mental illness group.

I know lots of neurotypicals that also dont use the popular social medias anymore

I have seen quite a bit of users on this forum state that they deleted or closed their social media account. They were happy about it or were satisfied about being off those social media apps/websites.

Neurotypicals are a small minority of people just as schizophrenics are as well.

Actually i think the percentage of neurotypicals is quite a bit higher. Isnt there only 1% of people that have schizophrenia in the world?

I think theres a distrust with social media. Or a dislike of being compared.

Like on facebook people dont share anywhere near as much as they used to.

Instagram is just a show off your best photos of your life type of app.

I still use social media but its more of a tool for communication than sharing my life publicly.
I still share a bit anonymously.

Society is evil and i refuse to partake in it. Of course i have social media but I don’t use my real name or anything, most of it is sh*t posts n what not. I hate society as a whole tho

I haven’t. I’m on FB, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Flickr. Same account on each for many years.

I don’t use social media because of paranoia. I don’t wanna be tracked by a digital footprint or people.

Me too @Turtle44
I’m too paranoid to have a Facebook account

I’m on instagram and facebook. I still need to talk to people.

Same I don’t want to be tracked. Paranoia, stress and anxiety.

If anyone needs me, they go through my spouse. He just says I’m doing fine. Everyone kind of gave up and stopped trying.

The first time I deleted my facebook account it was for delusion/psychosis reasons. The second time it was mostly just because I did not use it and don’t really like facebook. I opened one up for now recently just to contact a few people. Have not put up a profile pic, friended anyone, or anything like that. Not sure if I am going to leave up long term, unless I find some need for it.

My voices told me all the bad people i had to delete on facebook. I went from like 300 to 50 people lol.
The voice kept saying “not part of the plan, delete” whenever i looked at a name
If i was to keep it theyd say “they are included” or something lol

I have deleted and reinstated my Facebook page about 3 times in the last 5 years

Not sure why I did it

The first time was out of frustration of people who were not really my friends on there

Think when you feel so isolated from everyone, having a list of people that don’t bother to contact you hurts a lot.

Maybe it’s just how things are

These days I have 30 people on Facebook, and many of those are family

Afraid people I’m friends with on Facebook will slowly find out I have schizophrenia, and afraid of the social rejection associated with it.

I think there’s still a lot of schizophrenics who use some type of social media. I know it can suck at times, but it’s just the nature of the beast these days.

The schizophrenics who use it might be decent at their functioning or just not talk about their symptoms. That’s how I am on Facebook at least. I don’t want my family or friends to worry about me.

I still use Messenger and Whatsapp daily. I rarely use FB though as seeing all my friends succeed makes me depressed. Presz I had 800 friends, during psychosis I deleted lots of them thinking they were spying on me to help the mafia kill me. Now I have about 160 friends.

Before the internet took of, like the time in the 80s and early 90s, i used to socialise in sportsclubs. Separately from the clubs we were a social group of around 10 people and looked out for each other. That was back in Germany. Here in Australia these days with the internet its different. My sz declined, but still, i got some real life friends. As i got older the internet is so much more convenient. I am happy i still got skills to do real life socialising.

Most likely people who delete social media undergo social withdrawal, suffer an embarrassment, cut ties with people, develop critical or paranoid thoughts about the service, get stress from it so remove the stressor, etc.
