Why do antipsychotics just stop working?

I notice the same thing with any med.
After a while, maybe one or two months,
it stops working.
Why?

I think it is about finding the right med. Once you do it Will keep working.

I have tried 7. Are you stable?

Yes I am. I take 12mg of Invega and this drug works for me.

I was on invega. Didn’t work. Good for you.

Keep on trying. Maybe it is clozapine since you were discussing that before.

Maybe I Should add that I have a chronic auditory hallucination. I’ve tried everything from meds, clozapine, rtms etc. I’ve just learned to live with it and that is perfectly doable if you don’t hear them all the time. Sometimes you Will suffer, but that’s fine.

Are you still visiting things that are triggers for you?

You keep saying the tv is giving you messages (that’s increasing your fear) - so walk away from it for awhile. Draw a photo, clean, find a recipe and cook something that sounds good (share it with someone). Find a way out of your head by doing something to distract you from ‘looking for’ signs.

If you must see signs try looking for only good ones- they are there too. I use that as a helper when I couldn’t stop seeing signs for awhile. Eventually you wont need to look for those either - you’ll just know they are there too. But its a way back to seeing good in a world that seems dark sometimes.

Me too. Nothing stops the voices. Maybe they become milder and quieter but they are still here. Maybe I should learn to live with some symptoms

I generally see positive messages about God or from God

I’m sure seeing the positive messages are less stressful, but I’d strive for the goal of not letting ‘any’ message or sign spin around in your mind too much. If you want, write down the good ones and how they made you feel.

Faith can be an amazing help with any illness, but it helps to keep it simple. I know many here including myself that have had voice tell them too many lies - please keep hold of the truth that your a ‘human’, it should go without saying -but I know how Sz messes with our heads.

I still sometimes see both messages too. I turn away from the bad ones as soon as I can, and smile and am thankful for the good ones, but I don’t overthink either of them.

Medication antagonizes certain receptors in the brain, and your brain gradually upregulates them in defence, which eventually cancels the benefits out.

it is also the amount of the medication.

Signs and coincidences influence me.
How do they happen? Am I in a Truman show?
Do they give me hints and laugh with my reaction?

I don’t know what to say other than I took 10 different antipsychotics and had little luck. Eventually things just stopped. I will never know why.

I don’t take anything now. I know it sounds amazing to be symptom free and while I won’t say it’s not it’s also a difficult thing to deal with. I have had some relapses that were brought on by life stresses and I recently came out of one when things finally worked out and I’m still getting used to the silence. I spent the weekend in bed. I was depressed a bit but mostly lost. I felt the blankets and I felt my cat next to me and I didn’t have the sense of panic I used to feel so strongly. The two days felt like weeks. It’s a different world when you go from no psychosis to psychosis and back. You have to learn to handle silence. I was not going to harm myself but I had the passive urge just because there was this void.

I think the biggest problem with the standard medical system’s philosophy of prescribing meds is that the focus is on killing your symptoms rather than teaching you to live with them. No one taught me to cope with the varying levels of psychosis or it’s absence and meds never helped much. I was just a zombie to their effects.

I am not a zombie and I don’t have side effects. But they stop working after some months

 meds won’t work for everyone. I am happily on no meds now but I once never thought I would say that. They became very dangerous for me. I am not anti med by any stance. I still take meds that help — antidepressant and anticonvulsant for neuropathy. If meds hadn’t almost killed me a few times and helped my symptoms I would see them for favorably. My experience has been a bit extreme and I am happy for people who do well with them. I just want ppl to know there are people who will never do well with them.

Have you looked into any physical triggers? I was diagnosed with celiac disease almost 5 years ago and following a strictly gluten free diet has helped me. I think I was probably sick with it for decades and never knew. I saw a new integrative medicine doctor recently and discovered that many of my vitamin levels were low. I’m taking vitamins D, C, and B complex and notice a big difference. I’m also eating more iron rich foods and notice improvement. Diet and vitamins won’t cure you but it’s common to be deficient, especially on meds and especially if you do have celiac disease. More research is being found that correlates celiac disease to schizophrenia and if you can get tested for it it’s a very simple test. You just have to make sure to be eating gluten containing foods regularly before you get a blood test. The accuracy is very good. I think 95% or something. Many docs are not aware of how celiac disease presents. It’s possible to have it and have it very badly and show mild symptoms. You can even have it while showing mild GI symptoms. Celiac affects absorption of everything and the test is so simple that I would consider it.

I’ve been on Perphenazine for like 50 years. But the dose has to be frequently modified.

Abilify and Geodon both stopped working for me. Latuda never worked to begin with. Risperidone and olanzapine I wasn’t on long enough to find out if they really worked (switched off due to side effects). I’m now on Invega Sustenna 234 mg and terrified that it will stop working like Abilify and Geodon did.

To “answer” your question, I have no clue why they stop working. It’s very frustrating though.
