Why are bipolar highs called mania and not just high

does anyone know?..

I think mania is the medical term for it. I just call it being high, but I guess that can be confused with illicit drug use.

the word mania makes me think “crazy”

i believed i had bipolar in my 20’s…i used to have severe depression but then at times i would experience highs…but the highs lasted 3 or 4 hours…whereas depression lasted 6 months on and off…did my highs qualify as mania, i dont know…i did have a euphoric feeling and racing thoughts…i was in good form, but i did not do any of the overspending crazily,or make crazy business plans nor did i go without sleep

im confused…was i bipolar…

I liked the old term Manic Depression better than bipolar.

Mania is the medical word for it.

I like “manic depression” more, too. I feel it’s more descriptive of the condition. It was my original diagnosis long ago.

I don’t think that qualifies as bipolar, no. When I’m “high” or manic I do overspend, lose sleep, have racing thoughts, talk fast, get agitated, have euphoria, act impulsively and recklessly with sex, drugs, alcohol and cars. What you are talking about doesn’t seem extreme enough to be bipolar.

when i had bipolar highs, the highs lasted 3 to 4 hours…i now look back and think i had a dopamine rush and this caused the high…would that be true?

To be diagnosed with mania i think it has to last at least a week. There are other symptoms you have to have also.

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. When I switched to Abilify last May my mood swings went away. I tended to be down more than I was up. I would ask a psychiatrist if you are bipolar. In my case, my mom insisted that I go see a psychiatrist. I was delusional and having hallucinations, but didn’t know they weren’t real. The psychiatrist told me I had schizoaffective disorder.

You could have schizoaffective or bipolar, I don’t know all of your symptoms in detail and I’m not a doctor.
It’s best to ask a doctor.

My first diagnosis was bipolar too but then changed to sza then sza

I think bipolar II can have the transient euphoria but never having full mania is the description.

Mania I think needs to last a minimum of 7 days I’m not sure

I had some last for months.

I really wasn’t aware that I was having mood swings. My mom said to mention them to the psychiatrist. SzA was my first diagnosis.

I’m always aware of my mood swings but we’re all different. Talking to your pdoc is probably a good idea if it’s troublesome.

They went away when I switched to Abilify last May. That’s when I noticed it. Feeling down used to trigger me to drink alcohol.

Yeah i haven’t drank in years but when I’m depressed i think about it a lot.

I went to AA in 2016 and stopped drinking. My mom died February 2018, and in the Spring of 2019 I was suicidal and started drinking again.

My mood swings used to happen on a daily basis.

I’m sorry about your mother. Suicidal depression sucks. I understand how it can be a trigger.
